Hotel Description

You know, when I first rolled up to the Penthouse at 1 William Street in Melbourne’s bustling CBD, I was half-expecting some flashy over-the-top setup given it’s literally staring right across at the Crown Casino – I mean, you can practically wave at the blackjack tables from the balcony. But honestly, it turned out to be this surprisingly chill, high-end spot that feels more like a luxe apartment than a hotel room. I checked in around dusk after a long flight from Sydney, and the host was super laid-back about it – no fuss, just handed over the keys and pointed out the secure entry. It’s a 3-bedroom penthouse, which was perfect for me and my mates on that trip; we spread out like we owned the place, with that massive living area opening straight onto views of the Yarra River snaking through the city lights. The kitchen’s fully kitted out too – we whipped up brekkie one morning using stuff from the Queen Vic Market, which is just a quick tram ride away on the 35 or 96 line from Flinders Street, you know, that iconic station that’s like a five-minute stroll from here.

What really seals the deal, though, are those amazing views – and I say “amazing” without exaggeration. From up there on the top floor, you’re gazing out over Southbank’s promenade, with the casino’s glow lighting up the night and the Eureka Tower piercing the skyline like it’s showing off. We spent evenings out on the balcony with a bottle of local Yarra Valley wine, listening to the faint hum of the city below – trams clanging, the occasional burst of laughter from the riverside bars. It’s got all the mod cons you’d want: plush beds that actually let you sleep through the urban buzz (well, mostly – it can get a tad noisy on weekends when the casino crowd spills out onto Clarendon Street, but earplugs sorted that out for me). And parking? Forget trying to squeeze into a spot on William; we used the multi-level garage at the casino complex across the way – cheap validation if you pop in for a bite. Oh, and the place is spotless, with those high-thread-count sheets that feel like a hug after a day wandering Federation Square or hitting up the laneway cafes on Degraves Street. It’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi dipped a couple times during peak hours, sort of annoying when you’re streaming AFL games – but at 4 stars and a 9.5 rating, it’s punching way above.

Look, if you’re heading to Melbourne and want that mix of excitement without being right in the casino chaos, this penthouse is a gem. We timed our stay for mid-week in spring, when the area’s lively but not overwhelming – avoids the summer tourist crush around the Australian Open. It’s the kind of spot that makes you feel like a local, sipping coffee while watching the world go by from your private perch. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially for those sunsets over the river that just sort of melt your stress away. Trust me, it’s worth every penny for the views alone.
