Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Prima 4511 kind of by accident last time I was in Melbourne – I needed a spot close to the action without being right in the CBD chaos, and this place on Power Street in Southbank just clicked. It’s tucked away on that quieter end near the Yarra River, where you can actually hear the water lapping if you step out early morning, before the trams start rumbling down Clarendon Street. I drove in from the airport (parking’s a bit of a squeeze in that underground garage, honestly – spots are tight, so if you’re in a bigger car, brace yourself), and check-in was a breeze; the staff were these friendly locals who chatted about the best coffee spots nearby, like that little roastery on Kavanagh Street. No fuss, just handed over the keycard and pointed me to the elevators, which – side note – are super quick, even during peak hours when the Southbank crowds build up for events at the Arts Centre.
What really sold me on Prima 4511, though, was how it balances that 4-star vibe without feeling stuffy. The rooms? Clean and modern, with those big windows overlooking the river or the city skyline – I had one facing the Yarra, and waking up to that view with the morning fog rolling in was something else, you know? The bed was comfy enough to sink into after a day wandering Federation Square (it’s like a 10-minute stroll across the bridge), but I mean, the pillows were a tad firm for my liking, nothing a quick ask at the desk couldn’t fix. They’ve got a decent gym and a pool that’s heated just right for Melbourne’s unpredictable weather – I dipped in during a rainy afternoon in July, and it was blissfully empty. Breakfast downstairs is solid too; think fresh pastries and eggs made to order, though it gets busy around 8am when business folks from the nearby offices on Queensbridge Street pile in. Oh, and the Wi-Fi? Lightning fast, which saved me during a work call – no lag, even streaming from the room. It’s not perfect; the street noise filters in a bit at night if you’re a light sleeper, especially with Crown Casino just a stone’s throw away drawing the late-night crowd, but earplugs sorted that out for me.
All in all, if you’re hitting Melbourne for a mix of culture and convenience – say, catching a show at the Malthouse Theatre or just exploring the laneways – this spot’s a smart pick. It’s got that authentic Southbank energy, close enough to hop on a tram to Flinders Street Station without feeling overwhelmed by tourists. Honestly, for an 8.2 rating, it punches above its weight; I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in spring when the jacarandas bloom along the promenade. Just book ahead during Grand Prix season – it fills up fast.
