I’ve gotta say, stumbling upon the Private Apartment The Clocktower Light and Airy Studio on Bourke Street was one of those lucky finds during my last Melbourne trip – you know, the kind where you book last-minute and end up grinning the whole stay. Tucked into unit 305B at 399 Bourke Street, right in the heart of the CBD, it’s this charming little spot in what feels like a converted heritage building – I mean, the name “Clocktower” isn’t just for show; there’s this old-timey vibe with high ceilings and big windows that flood the place with natural light, making it feel way bigger than your average studio. I arrived mid-afternoon after dodging the usual tram chaos on Bourke – honestly, if you’re coming from the airport via SkyBus, it’s a breeze, just a short walk from Southern Cross Station, but watch out for the lunchtime crowds spilling out from the nearby office towers. Check-in was super straightforward; no front desk drama, just a key code sent via email, and boom, you’re in. The studio itself? Light and airy doesn’t even cover it – think crisp white walls, polished wooden floors that creak just a bit underfoot (in a cozy way, not annoying), and these massive sash windows overlooking the bustle below. I remember opening them up and catching that faint salty breeze from the bay, mixed with the aroma of fresh coffee from the laneway cafes on Hardware Lane, which is literally a stone’s throw away.
What really sold me, though, was how it balances that central location with actual livability – well, sort of; it’s not dead quiet at night with the occasional tram ding or late-night revelers from the bars on Little Bourke, but earplugs sorted that out, and honestly, it’s part of the Melbourne charm. The kitchenette’s kitted out nicely – full fridge, microwave, even a Nespresso machine that saved me from overpriced flat whites – and the bed? Queen-sized, super comfy with those soft linen sheets that make you want to sleep in. I spent one rainy afternoon just lounging on the couch, watching the world go by, and it felt like my own little pied-à-terre. Parking’s a bit of a hassle if you’re driving – street spots are rare and pricey, so I’d recommend the Wilson lot around the corner on Queen Street, or better yet, ditch the car and hop on the free City Circle tram. It’s perfect for solo travelers or couples; I mean, my partner and I cooked up a storm with goodies from Queen Victoria Market (a 10-minute stroll north), and the bathroom’s spotless with a rain shower that blasts away any jet lag. One minor gripe? The Wi-Fi can lag during peak hours – you know, when everyone’s streaming – but it was fine for emails and maps.
All in all, if you’re chasing that authentic Melbourne experience without the hotel stiffness, this 4-star gem (and yeah, that perfect 10 rating isn’t hype) is a winner. It’s smack in the middle of it all – think easy access to the graffiti-splashed Hosier Lane for your Insta shots or a quick jaunt to Federation Square for events – but with enough homey touches to recharge after a day of exploring. Book it during shoulder season like spring or autumn to avoid the summer crowds, and you’ll thank me later. Trust me, it’s the kind of place that makes you plot your next trip back before you’ve even left.
Melbourne’s apartments welcome families with spacious lounges, playground courtyards, and quick rides to beachside St Kilda.

What Our Guests Say
Prime location; lovely setting and comfortable experience The location is just perfect! And honestly a very reasonable price considering the start of school holidays and it's on one of the main streets of Melbourne CBD.
A half an hour bus from the airport and short (free) tram and you're right around the corner from this place!
I loved the view of the bell tower and its gorgeous chimes through the day. The place itself was bright and airy like the name says! And had all the essentials to make the stay comfortable and easy for a weekend.
The instructions from the hosts were prompt, clear and consistent throughout my stay, giving me all the information needed, and even providing advice and guidance on the public transport and the app to download, and other key parts for the journey.
It made organising the different parts a lot easier for me in coming from Syd.
I am very grateful to have stayed there and would absolutely stay again.
