Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to the Readyset Apartments on Spencer Street – actually, I stayed in the one at 220, right smack in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD – and thinking, wow, this is way more convenient than I expected for getting around without a car. You’re literally steps from Southern Cross Station, so if you’re hopping off a train from the airport or heading out to the Yarra Valley for a day trip, it’s a breeze. The building itself has that modern apartment vibe, not too flashy but clean and functional, with keyless entry that worked like a charm after a quick app setup – no fussing with front desks at odd hours, which was a godsend after my late flight. Honestly, the area buzzes with energy; you’ve got trams rattling down Spencer every few minutes, and if you wander over to Little Collins, there’s this little coffee spot called Auction Rooms that’s killer for a flat white and some people-watching. But fair warning, it can get noisy at night with the traffic – earplugs helped me, especially during peak hour when everyone’s rushing home.
What really sold me on Readyset was how it felt like a proper home base rather than just a hotel room – these are full apartments, you know, with kitchens stocked enough to whip up a brekkie from ingredients grabbed at the nearby Queen Victoria Market (pro tip: go early on weekends to beat the crowds and snag fresh pastries). I had a one-bedroom unit with a balcony overlooking the city grid, and the view of the Docklands lights at dusk was something else, all twinkly against the skyline. The beds are comfy, sort of that firm-but-not-too-firm hotel standard, and the Wi-Fi held up for streaming without a hitch, even during a rainy afternoon binge. It’s spread across a few spots like Rose Lane and Lonsdale Street too – I checked out a mate’s place on 33 Rose Lane, which was quieter, tucked away from the main drag but still close to Flagstaff Gardens for a quick jog or picnic. Well, minor gripe: some units feel a tad dated with the decor – think neutral tones that could use a refresh – and parking’s a hassle if you’re driving; street spots are rare, so factor in the nearby multi-level lots that charge an arm and a leg. But during quieter seasons like winter, when Melbourne’s all misty and subdued, it’s peaceful, and you avoid the summer event crowds from the nearby Marvel Stadium.
All in all, if you’re after a solid 4-star stay that’s more self-sufficient than your average hotel – perfect for families or longer trips where you want to cook and spread out – Readyset’s a smart pick. The 7.5 rating feels spot on; it’s not luxury, but it’s reliable and immerses you in the real Melbourne grind. I mean, waking up to the smell of street food vendors firing up on King Street made my mornings, and being able to stroll to the laneways for graffiti tours or dumplings in Chinatown (just a 10-minute walk) sealed the deal. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially if you’re budget-conscious but want that apartment freedom – just pack light and embrace the urban hum.
