Richmond Japanese-Style Townhouse close to MCG

You know, I stumbled upon the Richmond Japanese-Style Townhouse almost by accident last spring, right when Melbourne was buzzing with that early AFL season energy. I’d just hopped off the tram on Bridge Road – yeah, that strip with all the outlet shops and those killer Vietnamese bakeries that smell like fresh pandan all day – and it was only a short wander down a quiet side street to get there. The address is smack in the heart of Richmond, postcode 3121, and honestly, it’s tucked away enough that you feel like you’ve escaped the chaos without actually leaving it. Pulling up, the place looks like this sleek, modern townhouse with clean lines and a subtle nod to Japanese minimalism – think bamboo screens and a tiny zen garden out front that sort of whispers “relax” as soon as you see it. Check-in was a breeze; the host met me at the door with a quick rundown, no fuss, and handed over a keycard that felt more like borrowing a mate’s spare than some corporate hotel rigmarole. Oh, and parking – well, it’s street parking mostly, but I snagged a spot right out front without much hassle, though I’d warn you to avoid match days at the MCG if you’re driving; that whole area turns into a zoo.
What really hooked me, though, was stepping inside and feeling that instant shift – like teleporting from gritty Melbourne streets to a serene ryokan vibe, you know? The interiors are all about that Japanese aesthetic: polished wooden floors that creak just a little underfoot (in a charming way, not annoying), shoji screens dividing the spaces, and these low futon beds that make you want to flop down and forget the world. There’s a compact kitchenette with a proper tea set – loose-leaf sencha included – and the bathroom has one of those deep soaking tubs that begs for a long bath after traipsing around. I mean, it’s rated a perfect 10 for a reason; everything’s spotless, and the air has this faint, calming scent of hinoki wood that lingers without overpowering. Being so close to the MCG – literally a 10-minute stroll across the Yarra footbridge to Jolimont Station – it’s perfect if you’re catching a game or concert; I walked back after a late match and the neighborhood was alive but not rowdy, with that post-event hum of trams rattling by on Swan Street. Noise-wise, it’s surprisingly quiet at night, especially mid-week when Richmond settles down, though you might hear the occasional possum scampering on the roof – classic Aussie suburb quirk. And for food? Pop over to Church Street for some top-notch ramen spots that feel right at home with the hotel’s theme; I grabbed takeaway one evening and ate it on the balcony, watching the city lights flicker.
All in all, if you’re after a 4-star stay that feels personal and immersive rather than cookie-cutter, this townhouse is a gem – especially for solo travelers or couples who want that blend of culture and convenience without the tourist trap feel. Sure, it’s not huge, so if you’re a big group, it might feel snug, and the lack of a full concierge means you’re on your own for recommendations (though the host’s tips were spot-on). But honestly, waking up to birdsong in the courtyard and brewing your own matcha before heading out? It made my Melbourne trip feel authentic, like I was living there rather than just visiting. I’d book it again in a heartbeat, particularly in autumn when the leaves along the river turn gold – trust me, it’s worth it.
Hotels near me in Melbourne deliver effortless tram hops to theatres, sports arenas, and Southbank cultural hubs.

What Our Guests Say
Amazing spacious, comfortable and beautifully decorated house! We were a group of 4 couples down to Melbourne for the Bay in a Day bike ride. The house was very comfortable, amazingly decorated with Asian artwork, extremely well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and modern bathrooms, and in an area of Richmond a short walk to the station, cafes and restaurants and for the girls, some of the best shopping in Melbourne!
An excellent stay and will be recommending to friends! Such a beautiful style home, so much room for groups of people & a great balcony with a view of the NYE fireworks. The care package at the beginning was an all time favourite
