Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon the Richmond Retreat with Courtyard Parking during a quick getaway to Melbourne last spring, and honestly, it felt like striking gold in a city where finding a decent spot to stash your car is basically a blood sport. Tucked away in Richmond – that’s the 3121 postcode, right off Bridge Road if you’re navigating by tram – it’s this unassuming 4-star gem that doesn’t scream “tourist trap” from the outside. I pulled up after dodging the usual chaos on Swan Street, and there it was: that promised courtyard parking, all secure and shaded under some old gum trees, which is a lifesaver when you’re lugging bags from the airport or, well, just trying not to get a ticket in this parking-obsessed suburb. Check-in was a breeze – the staff were these laid-back locals who chatted about the best pho spots on Victoria Street (pro tip: head to I Love Pho if you’re craving something authentic and spicy), and they even hooked me up with a room upgrade because it was a quiet weekday. The vibe inside? Sort of like stepping into a cozy Victorian terrace house that’s been spruced up without losing its charm – think exposed brick walls that still carry a faint whiff of that earthy Melbourne rain, and big windows letting in the afternoon light that filters through the courtyard’s ferns.
What really sets this place apart, I mean, beyond the obvious retreat-from-the-bustle feel, is how it balances being smack in the middle of Richmond’s energy without letting it invade your peace. You’re a stone’s throw from the Yarra River trails – I took a morning jog there and it was blissfully empty before the weekend crowds hit, especially in shoulder season like September when the jacarandas are blooming – but back at the hotel, it’s all hushed hallways and that soft hum of the air con that drowns out any distant tram rattles from Church Street. The rooms aren’t massive, I’ll admit (mine was a bit snug for spreading out work stuff), but they’re spotless with these plush beds that smell faintly of lavender linen spray, and the en-suite bathrooms have those rain showers that make you linger way too long. Breakfast in the courtyard? Oh man, it’s nothing fancy – just fresh croissants, local jams, and coffee that actually tastes like it’s from a proper Melbourne roastery, not some chain slop. And if you’re into the footy scene, it’s a quick walk to the MCG, but come game days, you might hear the distant roar of the crowd; it’s exciting rather than annoying, though, sort of adds to the local flavor without keeping you up.
All in all, if you’re eyeing a trip to Melbourne and want somewhere that feels like a genuine hideaway in the heart of it – you know, close enough to hop on a tram to the CBD or wander over to the Abbotsford Convent for some artsy vibes – I’d say book this spot without hesitation. It’s got that 9.2 rating for a reason: practical perks like the parking save you headaches, the staff’s insider tips make you feel like a savvy visitor, and honestly, after a day exploring, sinking into that courtyard quiet is pure relief. Sure, it might not have a flashy spa or rooftop bar, but for a solid, no-fuss stay in one of Melbourne’s coolest suburbs, it’s hard to beat. Just watch out for the peak summer months when Richmond gets packed with festival-goers – snag a room early if you can.

Exceptional – Judith from New Zealand – 2 July 2025 (10/10)
Close to tram transport and close to our son's flat
What could be improved: We had to leave at 5am for our flight at 8am
We had to drop the key back to the convenience store but the shop does not open until 6.30am
We were told that we could put the keys under the locked door but could not do so.
Thankfully the store owner was there at 5am
Would it be practical to have a drop box to put the keys into if needing to leave outside store hoursExceptional – Emilia from United Kingdom – 28 June 2025 (10/10)
The apartment was clean, comfortable, quiet and loved the location in Richmond. Can't fault it.
Great location, warm and private. – Breanna from Australia – 8 October 2024 (9/10)
We enjoyed the courtyard aspect. It was a nice place to stay, close to all the places we went. Warm and cosy. The apartment was quiet as well. We also appreciated the parking space and the security of the parking.
What could be improved: The couch wasn’t very comfortable for my family to all lounge on.Very family friendly, beautiful neighbourhood. Not the cleanest. – Bridie from Australia – 2 September 2024 (8/10)
Great location, close walking distance to cafes and trams. Very family friendly.
What could be improved: The bathroom was not as clean as I’d expect. Blue toothpaste on the shower walls and the toilet was visibly not clean. Other than that, everything was great but hard to feel comfortable in a dirty bathroom personally. The wifi also didn’t work for the duration of our stay. No normal internet connection in this building so had to go for a walk to contact people.Exceptional – Liam from United Kingdom – 5 June 2025 (10/10)
Superb – Paul from Australia – 4 May 2025 (9/10)
Very good – Adrian from Australia – 5 November 2024 (8/10)
