Hotel Description

I remember pulling up to the Riverina in Footscray on a drizzly Melbourne afternoon – you know, one of those days where the sky’s all gray and the trams are rattling along Nicholson Street just a block away. It’s tucked right there in the heart of 3011, not far from the Maribyrnong River, and honestly, finding parking in this neighborhood can be a nightmare with all the market stalls and delivery vans clogging the lanes. But this place? They call it the “Ultimate Footscray Getaway with parking” for a reason – there’s a secure spot included, which saved me from circling for ages like I did last time I visited the area. Check-in was a breeze; the staff were these laid-back locals who chatted about the best pho spots nearby (try the one on Leeds Street, it’s unbeatable). The lobby’s got this cozy, unpretentious vibe – think exposed brick walls that smell faintly of fresh coffee from the machine in the corner, and a few potted ferns that make it feel more like a friend’s apartment than some sterile hotel chain.

Stepping into the room, well, it sort of hits you how they’ve nailed that four-star comfort without going overboard. The bed was plush, with those crisp white sheets that actually feel cool against your skin after a long day wandering, and the view out the window overlooked a quiet stretch of the river – peaceful in the evenings when the joggers thin out, though you might hear the distant hum of traffic from the Dynon Road bridge during rush hour (nothing earplugs can’t fix, I mean, it’s inner-city living). I appreciated the little kitchenette setup; stocked with basics so I could whip up a quick brekkie using goodies from the Footscray Market – oh man, the fresh mangoes and Vietnamese rolls there are a game-changer, especially on weekends when it’s buzzing but not overwhelmingly touristy like Queen Vic. The bathroom’s modern, with a rain shower that blasts away the city’s grit, and they even throw in eco-friendly toiletries that don’t smell like cheap chemicals. It’s not perfect – the Wi-Fi dipped a bit during peak evening hours, probably from all the nearby apartments – but for a spot that’s just a 10-minute tram ride into the CBD, it feels like a hidden gem. And parking, did I mention that? In Footscray, where spots vanish faster than a flat white at a cafe, it’s a lifesaver.

You should care about the Riverina if you’re after that authentic Melbourne west-side experience – think multicultural eats, street art on every corner, and none of the pretentious fluff of the city center hotels. I stayed during spring, when the markets are lively but not chaotic like summer peak, and it was ideal for exploring on foot or bike (they’ve got rentals nearby). Sure, if you’re sensitive to urban noise, it might not be your zen retreat, but for me, it captured Footscray’s gritty charm perfectly. I’d go back in a heartbeat – actually, I already recommended it to a mate heading down for the footy season at the nearby Whitten Oval. If you’re plotting a trip, book it; you won’t regret ditching the overpriced spots downtown for this.
