Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to RNR Serviced Apartments on Chetwynd Street in North Melbourne – it’s this quiet little pocket just off Errol Street, you know, where you’ve got those cozy cafes and the old-school pubs that locals swear by. Honestly, after dodging the tram tracks on Flemington Road, finding parking wasn’t a total nightmare; there’s street spots if you’re lucky, or they have a small lot out back, though it fills up quick during footy season at the nearby Arden Street Oval. I mean, North Melbourne’s got that vibe – not as hectic as the CBD, but you’re only a 10-minute tram ride from Queen Victoria Market, where the fresh produce smells hit you like a wave of citrus and coffee first thing in the morning. Walking in, the check-in was straightforward, sort of low-key with a friendly staffer who handed over the keys without much fuss – no fancy lobby, just a practical setup that feels more like borrowing a mate’s flat than a hotel.
What really sold me on the place was the apartments themselves – they’re spacious, with full kitchens that actually have decent cookware, not those flimsy sets you find elsewhere. I stayed in a one-bedroom unit, and it had this lived-in charm: comfy beds with crisp sheets that didn’t feel starched to death, and a balcony overlooking the street where you could hear the distant hum of the city without it keeping you up at night. Well, except maybe on weekends when the North Melbourne Kangaroos are playing; the cheers echo a bit, but it’s part of the fun if you’re into AFL. The decor’s a tad dated – think beige tones and those generic landscape prints – but it’s clean, and the Wi-Fi held up for streaming without buffering, which is a win when you’re jet-lagged and binge-watching Aussie shows. Oh, and there’s a laundry in each unit, which saved me from hauling clothes to that coin-op place on Victoria Street. I wandered out one evening to grab dinner at the Auction Rooms cafe nearby – killer smashed avo, by the way – and it felt so easy, like you’re embedded in the neighborhood rather than just visiting. Minor gripe: the air con can be noisy if you crank it, but in Melbourne’s unpredictable weather, you’ll need it come summer.
Look, with a 4-star rating and all, RNR isn’t trying to be some luxury high-rise in Southbank; it’s more for folks who want a home base without the pretense. If you’re traveling with family or staying longer than a weekend – say, for work near the Royal Melbourne Hospital or just exploring the city’s north side – it’s a solid pick. The 7.1 rating feels about right; nothing mind-blowing, but reliable and affordable, especially off-peak when rates dip. I’d go back, honestly – beats those soulless chain hotels downtown, and you get that authentic Melbourne feel, trams clanging and all. Just pack light; the elevators are on the smaller side.

Excellent location: close to hospitals, Melbourne Uni, North Melbourne, QVM; Easy to get to from the city (20 min walk, or short tram ride by 58 or 59). Apartment is clean, modern, functional and well-kept. Free parking is a plus especially this close to the city. The apartment has everything you need from washer-drier, fully functioning kitchen to an excellent shower and a very good heat pump air-conditioning system.
