Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to the Royal Executive Living – yeah, that’s the full name, Royal Executive Living Executive Retreat Residency 41, but honestly, who says all that? – on Little Lonsdale Street, right in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. It’s tucked away on this quieter stretch, just a stone’s throw from Flagstaff Gardens, which is perfect if you need a breather from the city buzz. I mean, you’re basically stumbling distance from the legal precinct and all those old Victorian buildings that make Melbourne feel so… Melbourne, you know? Arriving late afternoon during peak hour, I was bracing for chaos – trams clanging down Lonsdale, the faint hum of office workers spilling out – but the entrance is unassuming, almost hidden behind a row of those classic bluestone facades. Check-in was a breeze, though; the staff were these laid-back Aussies who chatted about the best nearby coffee spots (pro tip: head to Auction Rooms on Errol Street for a flat white that’ll ruin you for anything else). No massive lobby vibe here – it’s more like stepping into a serviced apartment block, with that clean, slightly corporate smell of fresh linen and whatever they’re using to polish the elevators. Parking? Well, it’s street parking mostly, and good luck snagging a spot during business hours; I ended up using the paid lot around the corner on A’Beckett Street, which set me back about 30 bucks a day. But hey, that’s city life.
What really sold me on this place was the rooms – spacious, like proper executive suites, with full kitchens that actually have decent cookware, not those sad little microwaves you get in some hotels. I stayed in one on the higher floors, and the view out over the rooftops toward the Docklands was killer at sunset, especially with Melbourne’s moody skies doing their thing. The bed was comfy enough, firm mattress with those plush pillows that make you sink in after a day wandering Queen Victoria Market (which is just a 10-minute walk north, by the way – go early for the fresh doughnuts). There’s a gym downstairs that’s surprisingly well-equipped for a 4-star spot, though it gets crowded around 7 AM with the corporate crowd. Breakfast isn’t included, but they have a little cafe setup in the lobby with okay pastries – nothing to write home about, sort of bland compared to the real deals at the market. Oh, and noise-wise, it’s not too bad; Little Lonsdale is off the main drag, so you don’t get the full blast of Bourke Street traffic, but if you’re a light sleeper, earplugs for the occasional siren wouldn’t hurt. I appreciated the free Wi-Fi that actually worked without dropping every five minutes – a godsend for remote work, which I was doing a bit of while there.
All in all, if you’re after a no-fuss base in Melbourne without breaking the bank, this spot’s a solid choice, especially for business trips or longer stays. It’s got that 7.4 rating for a reason – reliable, clean, but not flashy; the decor’s a tad dated in places, like the bathroom tiles could use a refresh, but it feels authentic to the area’s vibe. I’d go back in the shoulder seasons, say spring or autumn, when the city’s not sweltering or freezing, and you can really make the most of walking to spots like Hardware Lane for laneway dining. Honestly, for the price, it’s way better than those soulless chains further out – you feel plugged into the real Melbourne rhythm here. Just pack light if you’re relying on public transport; the trams stop right nearby, but lugging bags up from Southern Cross Station (about a 15-minute stroll) can be a workout.

What could be improved: Not what I consider "luxury" and not actually a part of Carlton-Ritz. Next door in Westside Place Tower 2. Staff were not 24 hours and not always helpful. Room is not serviced. No information is provided. View is mostly of building and side street. Did not see any of the restaurants but did not ask either. Some stains on the carpet & walls.
