I remember pulling up to ShelleyStayz on Shakespeare that one drizzly afternoon in Melbourne’s fickle spring – you know, the kind where the sun pokes through just as you’re cursing the weather app. It’s tucked away on Shakespeare Grove in St Kilda, right in that postcode 3182 spot where the vibe shifts from the bustle of Acland Street’s cake shops and backpacker haunts to something a bit more residential and chill. Honestly, finding parking was a breeze compared to the chaos down by the Esplanade; there’s usually a spot on the street if you’re not arriving peak hour, though I did have to circle once because of some roadworks on Carlisle Street – typical Melbourne, right? Check-in was straightforward, no fuss; the host handed over the keys with a quick chat about the best local coffee (head to Galleon Cafe if you’re into that flat white life), and I was in my room before I knew it. The place feels more like a boutique apartment stay than a stuffy hotel – four stars, sure, but with that perfect 10 rating vibe that comes from actual care, not just polish.
What really got me was how it nails that St Kilda essence without the overwhelm. The room I had overlooked the grove – quiet in the mornings, with just the distant hum of trams on Fitzroy Street filtering in, and honestly, the bed was one of those memory foam deals that make you forget you’re not at home (though the pillows were a tad firm for my taste, but hey, that’s fixable with a quick ask). You step out, and boom, you’re a short stroll from the beach – I mean, five minutes to the sand where locals jog at dawn or families picnic when the wind isn’t howling. In summer, it gets lively with the markets on the Upper Esplanade, but come winter, it’s blissfully low-key, perfect for wandering to Luna Park without the crowds. Sensory-wise, there’s that salty sea air mixing with the eucalyptus from the nearby parks, and the kitchenette in the room smelled faintly of fresh linen – no musty hotel nonsense here. I cooked up a simple brekkie one morning using stuff from the IGA on Acland, and it felt so authentic, like living in the suburb rather than visiting. Oh, and a minor gripe: the Wi-Fi dipped a bit during evenings when everyone’s streaming, but nothing a reset didn’t fix – sort of expected in an older building retrofitted like this.
All in all, if you’re chasing that real Melbourne experience without the CBD frenzy, ShelleyStayz is a gem. It’s not flashy, but it’s got heart – the kind that makes you linger over a sunset walk along the bay or pop into one of those hidden bars on Grey Street for a nightcap. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season when St Kilda feels like your own secret; just pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper, as the occasional partygoer might echo from afar. You know what? It’s the sort of place that reminds you why people fall for this city – unpretentious, welcoming, and right where the action meets the calm.
Melbourne hotels keep food lovers close to Queen Victoria Market, hidden cocktail dens, and rooftop beer gardens.
