Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to Sky Home on Southbank Boulevard – you know, that stretch right along the Yarra where the high-rises shoot up like they’re competing with the Eureka Tower next door. It’s smack in the middle of Melbourne’s Southbank, postcode 3006, and honestly, if you’re coming from the airport via the Tullamarine Freeway, it’s a breeze – about 25 minutes without traffic, but watch out during peak hours when everyone’s funneling into the CBD. I arrived around dusk, and the check-in was this low-key affair in the lobby; no fuss, just a friendly staffer who handed over the keycard and mentioned the free Wi-Fi password without me even asking. Stepping into the two-bedroom suite – well, it hit me right away. The place is perched high enough that you get these killer views of Port Phillip Bay (they call it ocean view, but it’s more that expansive bay sparkle leading out to the sea), and let me tell you, catching the sunset from the balcony with a glass of local Yarra Valley pinot in hand? Pure magic. The colors bleed across the water, turning the whole skyline into this fiery canvas – it’s the kind of thing that makes you forget you’re in a bustling city.
What really sold me on Sky Home, though, was how it feels like a proper home base rather than just another hotel room. It’s rated 9.1 for a reason, and with its four-star setup, the rooms are spacious – think modern kitchenette with a Nespresso machine (pods included, which is a nice touch, though I wish they’d stock more decaf options), comfy king beds that actually let you sleep through the night despite the faint hum of trams rattling along St Kilda Road below. Mornings were my favorite: I’d wake up to the sunrise peeking over the bay, all soft pinks and golds filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows – no need for an alarm when nature’s doing the work. Location-wise, you’re steps from the Southbank Promenade, where you can grab brekkie at one of those riverside cafes like The Boatbuilders Yard (their smashed avo is legendary, but go early to beat the brunch crowd). If you’re into the arts scene, it’s a quick stroll to the NGV or Hamer Hall – I mean, I wandered over to catch a show one evening and was back in under 10 minutes. Parking’s a bit of a hassle here, as Southbank’s notorious for it; they have secure spots in the building, but book ahead or you’ll be circling like I did once. Noise levels? Surprisingly mellow up high – you get the city buzz without the chaos, especially off-season in winter when things quiet down. Oh, and the bathroom’s got those rain showerheads that make you linger – steamy and luxurious, with that fresh eucalyptus scent from the amenities that screams Aussie vibes.
All in all, if you’re traveling with a partner or small family and want that mix of comfort and killer views without breaking the bank, Sky Home’s a gem. It’s not perfect – the air con can be a tad noisy if you’re a light sleeper, and summer weekends get lively with tourists spilling out from Crown Casino across the way – but those sunrise-to-sunset panoramas make up for it tenfold. I’ve stayed in fancier spots around Melbourne, but this one felt authentic, like you’re actually living the Southbank life. Book it for a long weekend; you won’t regret waking up to that bay glow.

The location and the views
What could be improved: Had a great time while I was in Melbourne. The place was lovely and the view is amazing. Excellent location, so easy to access all the locations we wanted to visit. Beds so comfy and even the couch was easy to fall asleep on. Definitely will book again when we return to Melbourne.Very good – Shane from Australia – 8 January 2025 (8/10)
Room and view was great. Easy check in and prompt communication.
What could be improved: When we arrived the dishwasher was full of dishes that looked dirty. A couple of window sills were very dusty. There was only almond milk provided for coffee, tea and breakfast which wasn't to our liking.Exceptional – Olivea from Australia – 3 January 2025 (10/10)
