Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to the Southbank Stature Building on Hancock Street – you know, that stretch in Southbank where the high-rises start popping up right along the Yarra River. It’s honestly one of those spots in Melbourne that feels like it’s got one foot in the bustling city vibe and the other in a more laid-back riverside chill. I was there last spring, dodging the usual afternoon traffic from the CBD, and let me tell you, finding parking wasn’t a nightmare like it can be over near Crown Casino – there’s a secure spot in the building’s garage, though you might want to book it ahead if you’re driving in from the airport. Check-in was pretty straightforward; the host met me at the lobby with keys and a quick rundown – no fuss, no long waits, which is a godsend after a flight. Stepping into the two-bedroom apartment, I was hit with that fresh, airy feel you get from high ceilings and big windows overlooking the river – well, sort of overlooking, depending on your floor, but mine had a killer view of the water and the city skyline lighting up at dusk. The place is rated a solid 8.6 for good reason; it’s got that four-star polish without feeling stuffy, like a home away from home with plush couches that actually sink in comfortably and a kitchen stocked enough to whip up a brekkie without hitting the Coles on Clarendon Street.
What really sold me on this spot – and I’ve stayed in a few Southbank pads before – is how it’s tucked away just enough to dodge the worst of the noise from the tram lines on St Kilda Road, but close enough to wander over to the South Wharf promenade for a coffee or a bite at one of those riverside spots (try the lamb souvlaki at the little Greek joint near the Polly Woodside ship – it’s a hidden gem locals swear by). The bedrooms are spacious, with those blackout curtains that actually work, so you can sleep through the early morning joggers along the river path. Honestly, the bathroom’s a highlight too – rainfall showerhead that feels like a spa after a day exploring Federation Square or catching a show at the Arts Centre, which is literally a 10-minute stroll away. There’s a bit of city hum in the evenings, especially if there’s an event at the MCG across the way, but it’s not overwhelming; earplugs helped on the busier nights. And get this – the building has a gym and pool on the lower levels, nothing flashy but perfect for a quick dip to shake off the jet lag. I mean, in peak summer, it gets crowded with families, so mornings are quieter for that.
All in all, if you’re heading to Melbourne and want a base that’s not some impersonal hotel chain, this apartment’s a smart pick – especially for groups or families who need the extra bedroom without breaking the bank. It’s got that authentic Southbank energy, where you can feel the pulse of the city (those distant tram bells and the faint smell of street food wafting up) but retreat to your own space. Sure, the Wi-Fi can lag a tad during peak hours, but nothing a quick reset didn’t fix. I’d go back in a heartbeat – book it for footy season if you can, when the vibe around here really amps up.
