Spacious 2 bed apartment, great location
You know, when I first pulled up to 23 Batman Street in West Melbourne, I was half-expecting some quirky nod to the Dark Knight – honestly, the street name always makes me chuckle – but what I got was this unassuming gem of an apartment that felt like a smart pick right from the start.
You know, when I first pulled up to 23 Batman Street in West Melbourne, I was half-expecting some quirky nod to the Dark Knight – honestly, the street name always makes me chuckle – but what I got was this unassuming gem of an apartment that felt like a smart pick right from the start. It’s tucked away in that industrial-chic pocket of the city, just a stone’s throw from the CBD without all the chaos of Collins Street traffic. I mean, I arrived on a drizzly Melbourne afternoon last autumn, and parking was a breeze – there’s permit spots nearby if you’re driving, but I ditched the car and hopped on the 57 tram from Spencer Street, which drops you practically at the doorstep in under 10 minutes from Flinders Street Station. Check-in was super straightforward; the host left a key in a lockbox with clear instructions via email – no fuss, no waiting around in a lobby. Stepping inside, the place hit me with that fresh, airy vibe – high ceilings, polished floorboards that creak just a little underfoot (in a charming way, not annoying), and big windows letting in that soft southern light. It’s rated a solid 9.5 for a reason, and as a 4-star spot, it punches above its weight without trying too hard.
What really sold me was how lived-in it felt, like borrowing a mate’s flat rather than some sterile hotel room. The two bedrooms are genuinely spacious – one with a queen bed that was plush and supportive (I slept like a log after a day exploring), and the other with twins that could easily fit kids or friends without anyone feeling crammed. The kitchen’s a highlight; fully stocked with decent appliances, including a Nespresso machine that saved me from mediocre cafe runs – though, let’s be real, the smell of fresh coffee from the little roastery on Adderley Street wafted in sometimes, tempting me out anyway. There’s a washer-dryer combo, which was a godsend for my muddy clothes after a wander through Flagstaff Gardens (just a five-minute walk away, and it’s gorgeous in spring with all the blooming jacarandas). Noise-wise, it’s pretty quiet for an urban spot – you might hear the occasional tram rumble or distant hum from the docks, but nothing that kept me up. One minor gripe? The bathroom’s on the smaller side, with a shower that takes a second to heat up – sort of a quirky old-building thing – but the hot water pressure is strong once it gets going. Overall, it just flows naturally for a longer stay; I cooked up some pasta one night using herbs from the Queen Victoria Market (a quick 15-minute stroll or tram ride north), and it felt like home base in a city that can sometimes overwhelm.
Look, if you’re heading to Melbourne and want that sweet spot between convenience and calm – especially during peak seasons like the Grand Prix or summer festivals when the CBD gets packed – this apartment on Batman Street is a no-brainer. You’re close enough to hit up the laneways for street art or grab dumplings in Chinatown without the hassle, yet far enough to escape the tourist throngs. I left feeling like I’d uncovered a local secret, and honestly, at that price point with the space and setup, you’d be hard-pressed to find better. Just pack light if stairs are an issue – it’s on the first floor with no lift – but otherwise, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to extend your trip.
Hotels near me in Melbourne deliver effortless tram hops to theatres, sports arenas, and Southbank cultural hubs.
