31st Floor! Amazing Sea View 2B2B@Southern Cross
I remember pulling up to 138 Spencer Street after a long drive from the airport—honestly, if you're coming in on a flight, just hop on the SkyBus and it'll drop you right near Southern Cross Station, which is basically next door.
I remember pulling up to 138 Spencer Street after a long drive from the airport—honestly, if you’re coming in on a flight, just hop on the SkyBus and it’ll drop you right near Southern Cross Station, which is basically next door. No fuss with taxis in that mad rush hour traffic along the Tullamarine. The building itself is one of those sleek high-rises that blend into the Docklands edge of the city, and checking into Unit 3101 on the 31st floor felt more like arriving at a mate’s fancy apartment than a stuffy hotel lobby. You get a code for the door—super straightforward, though I did fumble it a bit after jet lag kicked in. Stepping inside, whoa, that sea view hits you like a fresh breeze off Port Phillip Bay. It’s not just any view; from up there, you can spot the ferries chugging along, the Bolte Bridge lit up at dusk, and even a glimpse of the West Gate if the weather’s clear. The place is a solid 2-bedroom, 2-bath setup—perfect for a family or a couple of friends splitting the cost—with a full kitchen that actually has decent pots and pans, not those flimsy ones you find in some rentals. I whipped up brekkie one morning using stuff from the Coles down on Collins Street, just a five-minute stroll away. And the balcony? Gold. Sipping coffee out there as the sun rises over the water, with the faint hum of trams below—it’s Melbourne magic, you know?
What really sets this spot apart, though—well, aside from the height making you feel like you’re floating above the chaos—is how it’s tucked into that vibrant pocket where the CBD meets the Yarra. You’re steps from Southern Cross, so catching a train to the MCG for a footy match or heading out to St Kilda is a breeze, but high up, the noise from the platforms is barely a whisper. I mean, sure, during peak commute times you might hear a distant announcement or two, but it’s nothing compared to street-level spots on Flinders. The apartment’s got that modern vibe—crisp white linens, a comfy king bed in the master (though the second room’s doubles are a tad firm if you’re picky about mattresses), and a washer-dryer combo that saved me after a rainy day exploring the laneways. Parking’s available in the building’s secure garage, but book it ahead—spots fill up fast, especially when there’s an event at Marvel Stadium across the way. Oh, and pack light for the elevators; they can get crowded around check-out time on weekends. Sensory-wise, it’s all about that cool, airy feel—the AC hums quietly, and there’s this subtle salty tang in the air when you crack the windows, mixing with the coffee aroma from the machine they provide. Come summer, it’s a godsend for beating the heat, but in winter, those views turn moody with fog rolling in off the bay—sort of atmospheric, if you’re into that.
Look, if you’re after a 4-star stay that punches above its weight with a 9.1 rating, this is it—especially for longer trips where you want space to spread out without blowing the budget. I’ve stayed in pricier joints in Southbank that didn’t deliver half the wow factor. Just time it right; avoid AFL finals weekends unless you love the buzz, and you’ll have a peaceful perch overlooking it all. Honestly, waking up to that panorama made me extend my trip—why rush back to reality when Melbourne’s skyline is your backyard?
