Hotel Description
You know, when I first rolled up to 138 Spencer Street in Melbourne’s CBD, I was a bit skeptical – Spencer can get pretty chaotic with all the trams rattling by and folks spilling out of Southern Cross Station just across the road. But honestly, stepping into the lobby of this place, called 41st Floor! Premier 2B2B SkyStay@Southern Cross, changed my tune real quick. It’s not your typical hotel setup; more like a sleek apartment tower with a vibe that’s equal parts modern and lived-in. I mean, the check-in was a breeze – no long queues or stuffy front desk drama, just a quick code entry and up you go in this super-fast elevator that whooshes you to the 41st floor. (Pro tip: if you’re hauling luggage, grab one of those trolleys from the ground level; saves your back after a long flight from, say, Sydney.) The views hit you like a ton of bricks – or should I say, like the glittering lights of the Yarra River and Docklands stretching out below. At dusk, it’s magical, with the city humming faintly through the double-glazed windows, muffling the train horns from Southern Cross without making you feel totally cut off.
What really sets this spot apart, though – and I’ve stayed in a few high-rises around Melbourne – is how it feels like a proper home base rather than just a crash pad. The 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom setup is spacious enough for a small group or family; I traveled with a couple of mates, and we didn’t feel crammed at all. The kitchen’s got everything – full fridge, dishwasher, even a Nespresso machine that saved us from overpriced cafe runs on Collins Street nearby. (Though, fair warning, the pods aren’t included, so stock up at the Coles down on Spencer if you’re a coffee fiend like me.) Textures-wise, it’s all clean lines with plush bedding that actually feels fresh, not that starched hotel stuff, and the bathrooms have those rain showers that make you linger a bit too long. Well, sort of a minor gripe: the balcony can get windy up there, especially in Melbourne’s unpredictable spring weather, so hold onto your hat if you’re stepping out for that skyline selfie. Noise levels are surprisingly tame for being smack in the middle of things – quieter than you’d expect near the station, but if you’re a light sleeper, earplugs might help during peak hour rushes. And parking? There’s secure spots in the basement, but book ahead; it’s a godsend in this part of town where street parking’s a nightmare, especially on weekends when the markets over at Queen Vic are buzzing.
All in all, if you’re after a 4-star stay that punches above its weight with that 9.6 rating – yeah, it earns it – this is the kind of place that makes you rethink chain hotels. It’s perfect for soaking in Melbourne’s energy without the hassle; hop on a tram to Flinders Street for street art or wander to the Southbank eateries along the river. I left feeling like I’d scored a local’s secret – elevated, literally and figuratively, and way more affordable than those flashy spots on Little Bourke. You know what? Next time I’m in town for the Australian Open in January (when the city’s packed and humid), this is where I’ll book again. Just don’t tell too many people; I like my sky-high hideaway under the radar.

Amazing views and great location across the road from Southern Cross rail station. Excellent bathrooms and a nice little enclosed balcony off one of the bedrooms was good.
