Starry Nights on Lonsdale – Steps to Melbourne Icons Overview
I remember pulling up to Starry Nights on Lonsdale after a long flight into Melbourne – you know, that hazy afternoon when the city’s just starting to buzz with the after-work crowd spilling out onto the sidewalks. It’s tucked right there on Lonsdale Street in the heart of the CBD, and honestly, the first thing that hit me was how ridiculously close it is to everything without feeling like you’re in the thick of tourist chaos. I mean, I stepped out the door and wandered straight over to the State Library – that grand old building with its domed reading room – in under five minutes. And if you’re into food, Chinatown’s literally around the corner on Little Bourke; I grabbed some dim sum from this hole-in-the-wall spot that locals swear by, and it was spot-on. The hotel itself has this modern vibe with a nod to the name – think starry ceiling projections in the lobby that make you feel like you’re under the night sky, even though you’re smack in the urban grind. Check-in was a breeze, too; the staff were chatty Aussies who tipped me off about avoiding the tram crowds on Elizabeth Street during peak hour – super helpful if you’re lugging bags.
What really sold me on the place, though, was how it balances that 4-star comfort with some thoughtful touches that make you forget you’re in a hotel. The rooms are spacious enough – mine had a king bed that was like sinking into a cloud after a day of pounding the pavement – and the views out over the rooftops toward the Yarra River direction were pretty magical at dusk, especially with those floor-to-ceiling windows. There’s a rooftop terrace up top where I nursed a flat white one morning, listening to the distant hum of the city waking up, and it smelled faintly of eucalyptus from the nearby planters (or maybe that was just Melbourne’s vibe seeping in). Practical stuff? Parking’s a bit of a squeeze in the underground garage – well, it’s Melbourne CBD, so expect to maneuver like a pro – but they valet it if you ask. Noise-wise, Lonsdale can get lively with the bars and cafes spilling out in the evenings, especially on weekends when the laneways light up, but the rooms are well-insulated; I barely heard a peep once I closed the door. Oh, and the in-room coffee setup is legit – fresh pods and a machine that doesn’t taste like regret, which is a godsend for jet-lagged souls like me. It’s not perfect, though – the gym’s on the smaller side, sort of tucked away like an afterthought, but if you’re here to explore, you won’t miss it.
All in all, if you’re plotting a trip to Melbourne and want a spot that puts you steps from icons like Federation Square or the Queen Vic Market (go early for the best doughnuts, trust me), Starry Nights is a solid pick. It’s got that 9-out-of-10 rating for a reason – comfortable, central, and with just enough personality to make your stay memorable without trying too hard. I left feeling like I’d actually lived a slice of the city, not just visited, and that’s saying something in a place as vibrant as this. Book it for shoulder season if you can; summers get packed, but autumn’s when the streets feel alive without the crush.

Reviews of Starry Nights on Lonsdale – Steps to Melbourne Icons
Great value for money. – Tyrel from Australia – 19 May 2025 (10/10)
Location was fantastic. Facilities were ample and clean. Beds were comfortable and bedding was clean. Lots of space in the main room. Value for money considering all that you get is pretty darn good. Would definitely stay again.
Owner was super friendly and helpful and I was able to organise an early check in.
What could be improved: If I'm being super picky. TV is a tad damaged in that the brightness fades dramatically towards the top half of the tv when on which makes it difficult to view the screen, but really a mild inconvenience.
Apartment building only has 3 elevators (1 of which was unserviceable at the time). Wait times for eleavtors could be quite long especially around peak hour, be prepared to wait a while. The apartment is good – service bad and door issue rediculous – Liza from Australia – 8 May 2025 (8/10)
I requested earlier entry with no response. The bedroom door blew shut by the wind from an open window- it locked from the inside. The booking agent did not answer the phone. It was before 7pm. It cost me $377 to get a locksmith out
What could be improved: Returning emails and phone calls when needed. Not having a door that shuts automatically from the inside and costs a rediculous amount to open
