Hotel Description
You know, when I first rolled up to the Stunning 2BR Apartment on Elizabeth Street – right there at 462, smack in the middle of Melbourne’s CBD – I was honestly a bit skeptical. I’d just hopped off a tram from Flinders Street Station, dodging the usual afternoon rush of uni students and office workers spilling out from RMIT nearby, and the building looked like one of those sleek high-rises that could go either way: polished on the outside but maybe cramped inside. But stepping into the lobby – well, foyer, really, it’s more apartment-style than a full hotel – changed my mind quick. The check-in was a breeze; no long queues like at some of the bigger chains down on Collins Street. Just a friendly host who handed over the keys (actually a keycard, but you get the idea) and pointed me to the elevators. Oh, and parking? If you’re driving in, there’s secure spots underground, but fair warning, they fill up fast during peak hours – think evenings when everyone’s heading to the Queen Victoria Market for those late-night dumpling runs.
What really sold me, though, was the apartment itself. It’s a proper two-bedroom setup, not some shoebox pretending to be spacious – we’re talking high ceilings, a full kitchen with one of those fancy induction stoves (I whipped up a quick brekkie using fresh produce from the Vic Market, just a five-minute walk away), and a living area that actually feels lived-in, with comfy couches that sink just right after a day pounding the pavements. The pool and gym? Lifesavers, especially in Melbourne’s unpredictable summer heat. I mean, after trekking through the laneways off Little Bourke Street – you know, grabbing coffee at that hole-in-the-wall spot with the best flat whites – dipping into the rooftop pool was pure bliss. It’s not massive, sort of an infinity-edge thing with views over the city skyline, but quiet enough in the mornings before the crowds hit. The gym’s solid too, with free weights and treadmills that don’t feel grimy like some places; I squeezed in a quick session while listening to the distant hum of trams below. Sensory-wise, there’s this fresh, eucalyptus-y scent in the air – probably from the building’s cleaners – and the bedrooms have blackout curtains that block out the street noise pretty well, though Elizabeth Street can get rowdy on Friday nights with bar-hoppers heading to the nearby pubs. Nothing major, honestly – earplugs sorted it for me – but if you’re a light sleeper, pack ’em.
All in all, if you’re after a spot that feels like a home base in the heart of Melb without the stuffiness of a traditional hotel, this place nails it. It’s rated an 8.7 for good reason – four stars that actually deliver on the promise. Families or couples will love the space (plenty of room for unpacking without tripping over suitcases), and being so central means you’re steps from everything: the market for cheap eats, trams to the Yarra River, even a quick jaunt to the State Library if you’re into that. I stayed during a quieter shoulder season in spring, when the jacarandas are blooming and the city’s not too packed, but I’d bet it’s just as great in summer – just book ahead for those pool loungers. You know what? It’s the kind of place that makes you want to extend your trip, lingering over a morning coffee with that city buzz filtering in. If Melbourne’s on your list, don’t sleep on this one.
