Summer House Melbourne Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Summer House Melbourne on Barkly Street, you immediately get the sense this isn’t your typical corporate hotel. The building has this relaxed, almost residential feel that honestly caught me off guard — in the best way possible. It’s tucked into St Kilda in a spot that feels authentically Melbourne, where you’re surrounded by the kind of neighborhood energy that makes this city so addictive. The four-star rating feels just right here; it’s polished without being stuffy, comfortable without trying too hard.

The Neighborhood Advantage

Here’s what I love about this location — you’re actually living like a local for a few days. Barkly Street puts you right in the heart of St Kilda, which means you can walk to Acland Street for those famous cakes, hit the beach when the mood strikes, or just wander through the Sunday markets. I mean, couples consistently rate this spot 9.0 out of 10, and after spending time here, I totally get why. You’re close enough to the city center that getting around is easy, but far enough out that you feel like you’ve escaped the tourist bubble.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in had this perfect balance of modern comfort and Melbourne character. Large windows let in plenty of natural light, and the design feels thoughtfully curated rather than cookie-cutter corporate. What struck me most was how quiet it was at night — you know how some city hotels can be, but here you actually get proper sleep. The amenities hit all the right notes without going overboard, and there’s enough space to spread out and actually relax.

Daily Rhythms

Mornings here have this easy rhythm that I found myself settling into quickly. The staff genuinely seems to care about making your stay work, not just checking boxes on some service script. Parking in St Kilda can be a nightmare, but they’ve sorted that out properly. What I appreciated most was how the hotel feels connected to its neighborhood — you’re not isolated in some tourist bubble, you’re actually experiencing Melbourne the way it’s meant to be experienced.

Why Guests Love It

Look, the 8.9 location rating from recent guests tells the real story here. This isn’t about flashy amenities or over-the-top service — it’s about being in exactly the right spot to experience Melbourne properly. You can walk to the beach, explore the local food scene, catch live music, or just sit in a café and watch the city happen around you. Summer House Melbourne gets that balance right between being a comfortable base and putting you in the middle of what makes this city special. It’s the kind of place where you end up extending your stay because you’re not ready to leave the neighborhood yet.

Welcoming environment feels like home, very nice property, the manger/ owner was very friendly and helpful. Having a bed for the cost I paid, was great. I like welcome basket and curtains providing privacy. The kitchen was nice too.

  • Rum5 from Australia (8/10)

It was really good experience up until I was kicked out for trying to help out a chic to get her luggage from upstairs which I thought was a bit extreme…but other than that it a nice place to stay and have a beer 🍺

  • Jo from Canada (9/10)

I stayed in the female 4 bed dorm the first time which highly exceeded my expectations. The female 8 bed went down in quality a fair bit but I did make some good friends in there. I do love the rooftop access and the yoga classes by djamila were fantastic. The planned events were awesome.

  • Katarina from Canada (8/10)

The proximity was great! The basics were there! The patio with the view and offering pancake Sundays was a nice touch.

  • Ozsb from Australia (7/10)

Stayed one night while passing through Melbourne, check in was easy, reception was open late. Lift was handy to get to rooms. Staff were friendly. Ensuite bathroom and room were very clean. This is more of a party hostel so great for solo travellers and meeting new people.
