Summer House Melbourne Overview
I remember pulling up to Summer House Melbourne on Barkly Street in St Kilda – you know, that stretch where the Victorian terraces mix with those funky little cafes – and thinking, wow, this place nails that effortless beachy vibe without trying too hard. It’s right in the heart of 3182, just a stone’s throw from Acland Street, where you can grab one of those legendary cakes from Monarch or whatever it’s called these days (honestly, they’re worth the calories). I arrived in the late afternoon during summer, and the street was buzzing – trams clanging down Fitzroy Street, the faint salty whiff from the bay drifting in, and yeah, parking was a bit of a hassle, but there’s a spot around the corner on Carlisle if you circle once or twice. Check-in was smooth, though; the staff were these laid-back locals who chatted about the best spots for sunset walks along the Esplanade – not the scripted stuff, but real tips, like avoiding the crowds at Luna Park on weekends.
Stepping inside, it’s got this sort of converted mansion feel, with high ceilings and those polished floorboards that creak just enough to remind you it’s not some sterile chain. My room – well, I splurged on one with a balcony overlooking the garden – had these crisp white linens that smelled faintly of lavender (or was it eucalyptus? Anyway, fresh). The bed was comfy, king-sized and all, but fair warning, if you’re a light sleeper, the occasional tram rumble or laughter from nearby pubs on Barkly might sneak in at night; it’s lively here, especially in peak season from December to February when St Kilda turns into party central. But that’s part of the charm, right? The communal areas are what sold me – there’s this outdoor pool area that’s like a hidden oasis, with loungers and string lights that come on at dusk, perfect for unwinding after a day at the beach. Breakfast was solid too, nothing fancy, but fresh croissants and decent coffee from a local roaster – I mean, you can’t go wrong in Melbourne with that. Oh, and the Wi-Fi held up even when I was streaming shows late at night, which is more than I can say for some places I’ve stayed.
All in all, if you’re after a 4-star spot that feels authentically Melbourne – think boho chic with a side of seaside grit – Summer House is a solid pick, scoring that 8.3 rating for good reason. It’s not flawless; the bathroom could use a bit more counter space, and prices spike in summer, but honestly, for the location alone, it’s worth it. You’d be close enough to wander over to the Penguin Parade viewings or just chill on St Kilda Beach without needing a car. I left feeling like I’d actually lived a slice of local life, you know? If you’re visiting for the vibes rather than luxury overload, book it – just pack earplugs if you’re not into the neighborhood hum.

Welcoming environment feels like home, very nice property, the manger/ owner was very friendly and helpful. Having a bed for the cost I paid, was great. I like welcome basket and curtains providing privacy. The kitchen was nice too.

It was really good experience up until I was kicked out for trying to help out a chic to get her luggage from upstairs which I thought was a bit extreme…but other than that it a nice place to stay and have a beer 🍺

I stayed in the female 4 bed dorm the first time which highly exceeded my expectations. The female 8 bed went down in quality a fair bit but I did make some good friends in there. I do love the rooftop access and the yoga classes by djamila were fantastic. The planned events were awesome.

The proximity was great! The basics were there! The patio with the view and offering pancake Sundays was a nice touch.

Stayed one night while passing through Melbourne, check in was easy, reception was open late. Lift was handy to get to rooms. Staff were friendly. Ensuite bathroom and room were very clean. This is more of a party hostel so great for solo travellers and meeting new people.
