Hotel Description

I remember pulling up to the Sunny Retreat & Balcony on Queens Road – you know, that stretch in Melbourne’s inner south where the traffic hums along but doesn’t quite overwhelm everything. It’s right there at number 79, tucked between those grand old apartment blocks and just a stone’s throw from Albert Park Lake. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical at first because Queens Road can get busy during peak hours, especially with all the trams rattling by toward St Kilda, but parking turned out to be a breeze – they have a secure spot out back that saved me from circling forever like I usually do in this part of town. Check-in was quick and friendly; the staff – a mix of locals with that easygoing Aussie vibe – handed over the keycard with a tip about the best coffee spot down the road at the little cafe on Toorak Road. Stepping into the lobby, it had this bright, airy feel, with sunlight streaming through big windows and a faint scent of eucalyptus from the fresh diffusers they use – sort of like walking into a well-kept mate’s place rather than some sterile hotel chain.

What really sold me on the place was the room itself – I mean, it’s called Sunny Retreat for a reason. Mine was on the upper floor with this generous balcony overlooking the treetops toward Albert Park, and let me tell you, waking up to the morning light filtering in and birds chirping from the park made those early jet-lag hours way more bearable. The bed was plush, with those crisp white sheets that feel cool against your skin, and the bathroom had a rain shower that actually worked without any of that low-pressure nonsense you sometimes get in older buildings around here. I spent an afternoon just lounging out there on the balcony with a book, watching joggers loop around the lake path – it’s only a five-minute walk across the road, which is perfect if you’re into that casual Melbourne fitness scene or even catching a glimpse of the Grand Prix setup if you time your visit right in March. The neighborhood’s got that low-key charm too; pop over to Chapel Street for some boutique shopping or grab fish and chips from one of the spots in St Kilda, but back at the hotel, it’s surprisingly quiet at night – well, aside from the occasional distant tram bell, which I actually found kind of soothing after a day out. Oh, and the Wi-Fi was spot-on, no buffering during my Netflix binge, though I wish they’d stock a few more local snacks in the mini-bar instead of the usual generic stuff.

All in all, if you’re looking for a solid 4-star spot that feels more like a hidden gem than a tourist trap, this place nails it – especially with that perfect 10 rating that’s well-earned from what I saw. It’s not flawless; the elevator can be a tad slow during busy check-out times, and if you’re sensitive to city sounds, pack earplugs just in case. But honestly, for the price and the location – smack in the middle of Melbourne’s vibrant south side, close enough to the CBD without the chaos – it’s a winner. I’d go back in a heartbeat for a relaxed weekend, maybe during spring when the park’s blooming and the air smells fresh after a rain. You know what? If you’re planning a trip down under, book it – you’ll thank me when you’re sipping that balcony coffee with the sun on your face.

Reviews

  • If you want ease of location, close to cafes and trams this is a great place. Albert park across the road was great for – Michelle from Australia – 19 June 2025 (10/10)

The location was fantastic. Great communication and comfortable unit. Views were amazing and liked the complex. It was June, so a little chilly to use the pool, however will be great in the summer months.
Bonus was pet friendly and our pups enjoyed their stay as well.

What could be improved: We liked the property. The unit was well presented and felt like a home rather than a motel.

  • Exceptional – Mel from Australia – 11 June 2025 (10/10)

Clean, tidy and secure location. Would highly recommend!
