Sweet Home Apartment North Melbourne Overview
I remember pulling up to Sweet Home Apartment on Macaulay Road in North Melbourne – you know, that stretch where the old warehouses mix with those cute Victorian terraces, just a stone’s throw from the Upfield train line. It was one of those crisp Melbourne mornings in spring, and honestly, after dodging the traffic on Flemington Road, finding parking right out front felt like a small victory (though fair warning, it can get tight during peak hours when everyone’s commuting to the hospital district). The place doesn’t scream “hotel” from the outside – more like a modern apartment block that’s been thoughtfully kitted out for travelers. Check-in was a breeze; the staff were these laid-back locals who handed over the key card with a quick chat about the best coffee spots on Errol Street – none of that scripted hotel spiel, which I appreciated after a long flight. Stepping inside my unit, it hit me how spacious it was for a 4-star spot; we’re talking a full kitchenette with actual decent cookware, not those flimsy sets you find elsewhere. The bed was comfy, with that fresh linen smell that makes you want to flop right down, and the balcony overlooked a quiet courtyard – well, quiet except for the occasional tram rumble from nearby, but hey, that’s Melbourne for you.
What really sets Sweet Home apart, I think, is how it feels like crashing at a friend’s place rather than some sterile chain. The decor’s got this cozy, understated vibe – think soft grey tones, wooden accents, and those little touches like a welcome basket with Tim Tams and fresh milk in the fridge (a lifesaver for jet-lagged tea cravings). I stayed during the quieter shoulder season in autumn, so noise wasn’t an issue, but I’ve heard from mates that summer can bring more foot traffic from folks heading to the Queen Victoria Market, which is just a 15-minute walk away via Arden Street. The Wi-Fi was solid – streamed shows without a hitch – and the bathroom had one of those rain showers that actually delivers on pressure, not the dribble you sometimes get. Minor gripe? The air con can be a bit noisy if you’re a light sleeper, but popping in earplugs sorted that out. Oh, and the on-site laundry was a godsend for longer stays; I threw in a load while exploring the nearby Royal Park, where the paths smell like eucalyptus after rain and you can spot kangaroos if you’re lucky (or is that just my imagination? Nah, they’re there sometimes).
All in all, if you’re after a spot that’s got that authentic North Melbourne feel – close enough to hop on a tram to the CBD but far from the tourist chaos of Federation Square – Sweet Home’s a winner with its 9.1 rating that feels well-earned. It’s perfect for families or anyone doing a week-long stint, saving you a bundle on eating out thanks to that kitchen. I mean, I whipped up brekkie with market-fresh produce and felt right at home. Would I go back? Absolutely, especially in winter when the area’s cafes do those hearty soups that warm you up against the chill. Just book early if you’re aiming for footy season at the nearby Marvel Stadium – things fill up fast.
Discovering Melbourne offers visitors an unforgettable journey through Australia’s most sophisticated city, from its gold rush history to its vibrant present and world-renowned connections to arts, culture, and urban innovation.

The hosts provided explicit written and video instructions to enter both the accommodation and parking location, making it a stress free arrival and departure. You open the door to light, homely comfort and all the modern features you could want. The kitchen is well appointed with excellent cooking appliances. A beautiful balcony to enjoy some outdoor fresh air and share a drink or a meal, an ensuite in the first airconditioned bedroom as well as a main bathroom for the apartment…we were amazed at what this apartment offered. Air conditioner in the living area cooled the apartment quickly (we were there in Summer) and while the 2nd bedroom only has a pedestal fan, it adequately cooled the room, while the bifold doors close off the 2 bedrooms from the lounge and allowed the 1st bedroom air con to cool the sleeping section of the apartment. The hosts had left a Christmas tree up in the living area to continue the festive spirit through January.
Sweet Home apartment is conveniently located in walking distance to the Macaulay Train station and then only a short trip to reach Flinders St station and all the life of the city. Having a Woolworths and some small eateries on the ground floor was a total plus. We loved our stay!Sarah from Australia (9/10)

The apartment was impecibly clean, locating keys and parking was super easy and stress free, we were able to check in far earlier than we planned which was brilliant after a long drive from Sydney. Close to the station, supermarket downstairs, walk to the train station which got us to Marvel Stadium in 2 stops.
