I rolled up around midday after grabbing a flat white from one of those hole-in-the-wall cafes on Coventry – the South Melbourne Market’s just a five-minute stroll away, by the way, and if you’re into fresh produce or those killer dim sims, it’s a must – and check-in was a breeze. The staff were these laid-back locals who chatted about the best spots for brekkie without making it feel scripted, you know? No long queues or that sterile hotel lobby smell; instead, it’s got this warm, arty feel with exposed brick walls and some quirky vintage touches that nod to the area’s old warehouse history. Honestly, parking was a bit of a squeeze – street spots fill up fast, especially on market days – but they sorted me out with a nearby garage tip that saved me from circling forever.

What really won me over, though, was how the place balances that boutique charm with actual comfort – it’s a solid 4-star setup without trying too hard to be flashy. My room (I went for one of the superiors, overlooking the street) had these massive windows letting in that soft Melbourne light, and the bed was one of those plush numbers where you sink in and forget about jet lag. Oh, and the Wi-Fi? Blazing fast, which was a lifesaver for catching up on work while pretending I was on holiday. Sensory-wise, it’s all about that fresh linen scent in the rooms mixed with the occasional whiff of eucalyptus from their amenities – subtle, but it makes you feel grounded in Australia.

All in all, if you’re after a spot that’s authentically Melbourne without the tourist trap prices – we’re talking around the corner from Albert Park Lake for those morning jogs or easy access to St Kilda via tram – The Evelyn’s a gem. It’s got that high 9 rating for a reason; it’s not perfect (breakfast options could be more inventive, sort of basic continental unless you venture out), but it feels lived-in and welcoming, like staying with a friend who knows the city inside out. I’d book it again in a heartbeat, especially in spring when the jacarandas are blooming and the whole neighborhood comes alive – just pack light, as the elevators are on the cozy side.   The place gave me and my associates an unuaual shock for it's artistic beauty in comparison to what appeared to be online and also from outside. The house was very artistic in theme, and we are all in good comfort for our duration of stay. Having a pub with amazing staff, right next door, topped it off for us! We had an amazing time! Overall, its deftinitely recommend in that region.
