‘The Loft’ A Chic City-fringe Balcony Hideaway
I stumbled upon 'The Loft' during a quick Melbourne getaway last spring, and honestly, it was one of those spots that just clicks – you know, the kind where you walk in and immediately feel like you've scored a secret hideaway without the pretentious vibe.
I stumbled upon ‘The Loft’ during a quick Melbourne getaway last spring, and honestly, it was one of those spots that just clicks – you know, the kind where you walk in and immediately feel like you’ve scored a secret hideaway without the pretentious vibe. Tucked away in that quirky pocket of Flemington, right off Flemington Road (postcode 3031, if you’re mapping it), it’s close enough to the city hum but far enough to dodge the worst of the CBD chaos. I mean, it’s literally a stone’s throw from the tram lines on Racecourse Road – hop on the 57 and you’re at Queen Victoria Market in under 15 minutes, picking up fresh coffee and those killer doughnuts from the stalls. Parking? Well, it’s street parking mostly, and it can be a bit of a hunt during race days at Moonee Valley (avoid Derby weekend if you can), but once you’re in, the place feels worlds away. My check-in was a breeze – the host handed over the keys with a casual chat about the best local brews, and I was up those creaky stairs to my balcony suite before I knew it.
What really sold me was how ‘The Loft’ nails that chic, city-fringe aesthetic without trying too hard – think exposed brick walls that smell faintly of aged timber (in a good way, not musty), and a balcony overlooking a mishmash of Victorian rooftops and the occasional tram rattle below. It’s got this loft vibe, sort of like a converted warehouse space, with high ceilings and a kitchenette that’s actually functional – I whipped up a quick brekkie using herbs from the little planter box outside. The bed? Super comfy, king-sized with those crisp white sheets that make you want to lounge all morning, though fair warning, if you’re a light sleeper, the early morning traffic on nearby Arden Street might nudge you awake around 7am. But hey, that’s Melbourne for you – the energy’s part of the charm. I spent evenings out on that balcony, sipping a local pinot (grab one from the bottle shop on Macaulay Road, it’s a five-minute stroll), watching the sunset dip behind Royal Park. And get this, it’s pet-friendly in a low-key way – I saw a couple with their dog chilling in the communal courtyard, which has these funky string lights that come on at dusk, turning it into a mini oasis.
All in all, if you’re after a four-star spot with a solid 9/10 rating that feels more like crashing at a stylish friend’s pad than a sterile hotel, ‘The Loft’ is it – especially for solo travelers or couples who want that balcony escape without blowing the budget. Sure, the Wi-Fi dipped a tad during peak hours (streaming Netflix was fine, but Zoom calls? Maybe not), but that’s a minor gripe in the grand scheme. I’d go back in a heartbeat, maybe in autumn when the leaves in the park turn – it’s got that authentic Melbourne edge, blending urban grit with just enough polish to make you feel pampered. You won’t regret it, trust me.
Melbourne’s hotels wrap guests in laneway graffiti views, botanical garden strolls, and late-night jazz lounges.

What Our Guests Say
Great for a short stay and will book this property again. Location was fantastic. Walking distance to parks, playgrounds, restaurants, supermarket and family members homes. Excellent for a short stay and I loved the balcony garden. There were no issues re street noise or neighbours. Could not hear other apartments noise. Handy to have the garage, and second car park as we had guests one afternoon that could park off street.
What could be improved: Darkness at night - the amount of light coming through the windows, could do with some black out blinds. We chose to sleep in the loft bedroom, I ended up having to buy a sleep mask to sleep.
Fun, cute, cozy, safe and clean It was in such a cute area and the space was so clean and cute and just nice to hang out at
