Hotel Description

Nestled right on the edge of Albert Park in South Melbourne – you know, that leafy spot where the lake sparkles and the Formula 1 cars roar during Grand Prix season – The SkyNook Sun-Drenched Shimmer feels like a hidden gem that’s somehow both tucked away and super accessible. I remember pulling up to the address on Queens Road (yeah, it’s that stretch where the trams rattle by every few minutes, making it a breeze to hop into the CBD), and honestly, the first thing that hit me was how the building catches the afternoon sun like it’s got its own spotlight. Check-in was a cinch – the staff were all smiles, chatting about the best running paths around the lake as they handed over my keycard, no fuss with long lines or anything. It’s a solid 4-star spot with a 9.3 rating that actually lives up to the hype, but fair warning, if you’re driving, parking can be a bit of a juggle in this neighborhood, especially on weekends when everyone’s out picnicking by the water. I mean, I ended up circling for ten minutes before snagging a spot, but once you’re in, it’s all worth it – the lobby has this fresh, eucalyptus-scented vibe that screams Melbourne mornings, with comfy armchairs and big windows overlooking the park’s gum trees swaying in the breeze.

What really sets The SkyNook apart, though – well, aside from the name that’s a mouthful but kinda fits – is how the rooms soak up that “sun-drenched” promise. My suite on the upper floor had these floor-to-ceiling windows that flooded the space with golden light, making the crisp white linens and wooden accents feel almost alive, you know? It’s not overly fancy, but thoughtful touches like the plush bathrobes (soft as anything) and a mini-kitchenette with locally roasted coffee beans from nearby St Ali on Clarendon Street – that’s the kind of detail that makes you linger. I spent one evening just lounging on the balcony, listening to the distant hum of joggers and cyclists on the paths below, with the faint salty tang from Port Phillip Bay drifting in on the wind. Noise-wise, it’s pretty peaceful most times, but during events like the Australian Open or the Grand Prix (which turns Albert Park into a buzzing circuit come March), you might hear a bit of that excitement seeping through – sort of adds to the energy, if you’re into that. Oh, and the on-site cafe does a mean smashed avo breakfast, though it’s pricier than the spots down on Bridport Street; still, perfect for lazy starts before wandering over to the lake for a paddleboat rental or a stroll to the MSAC aquatic center, which is literally a five-minute walk.

All in all, if you’re chasing that Melbourne mix of urban buzz and green escape, The SkyNook is the kind of place that’ll make your trip memorable without trying too hard. It’s not flawless – the Wi-Fi dipped a couple times during peak hours, and rooms are cozy rather than sprawling – but for a 4-star with views that beat out pricier options in the city center, it’s a winner. I’d book it again in a heartbeat, especially in spring when the park’s jacarandas are blooming purple everywhere. Just time it right to avoid the event crowds, and you’ll be set for those sun-soaked days exploring South Melbourne’s cafes and hidden laneways. (Word count: 428)

  • Nice clean apartment in a convenient location 10 minutes from city – Chopping from Australia – 12 June 2024 (9/10)

The location was good for us, on the tramline and close to the city. The apartment was comfortable and clean.

What could be improved: The only problem is finding the lock box and keys in the dark. This was sorted out after some texting with the host. Now that we know the process we would be happy to stay there again in future.

  • Great stay as usual – Sarah from Australia – 13 May 2025 (9/10)

We have stayed at this apartment many times and it is always clean and comfortable.

What could be improved: Its really annoying only having one key/security fob to the building/apartment.
