The Sophia Overview

I remember pulling up to The Sophia on Swan Street in Cremorne – you know, that little pocket of Melbourne that’s sort of tucked between Richmond and the Yarra River, where the vibe shifts from city hustle to something a bit more laid-back. It’s Apartment 215 at 140 Swan, and honestly, finding it was a breeze if you’re coming from the CBD; just hop on the 70 tram from Flinders Street and you’re there in under 15 minutes. I arrived mid-afternoon during a drizzly spring day – Melbourne weather, right? – and the check-in was super straightforward, no fuss with a front desk or anything; it’s more like a serviced apartment setup, so they emailed me the access code ahead of time. Walking in, the place hit me with this clean, modern scent, like fresh linen mixed with a hint of eucalyptus from the diffuser in the lobby area. The building itself is unassuming from the outside, blending right in with the row of cafes and boutiques on Swan, but inside, it’s got that polished 4-star feel without trying too hard. My room – well, suite, really – overlooked the street, and I could hear the faint rumble of trams passing by, which actually lulled me to sleep at night, though if you’re a light sleeper, you might want earplugs for the early morning deliveries to the nearby shops.

What really sold me on The Sophia was how it nails that balance of comfort and convenience for someone exploring Melbourne. The rooms are spacious, with these plush king beds that feel like sinking into a cloud after a day wandering around – I spent one evening just lounging on the balcony, sipping a flat white from the coffee machine in the kitchenette (they stock decent pods, by the way). It’s rated 9.2 for a reason; everything’s spotless, and the little touches, like the rainfall showerhead and those thick, fluffy towels, make it feel luxurious without the pretentiousness. Cremorne’s got this underrated charm – you’re steps from spots like the Corner Hotel for live music, or you can stroll down to the Yarra Trail for a jog if that’s your thing. I mean, I grabbed breakfast at a tiny bakery just around the corner on Church Street, where the locals queue for sourdough that’s still warm from the oven. Parking’s a bit of a juggle on Swan Street – metered spots fill up fast during peak hours, especially on weekends when everyone’s hitting the Richmond markets – but there’s a secure garage option if you book ahead. One minor gripe: the Wi-Fi dipped a tad during evenings, probably from everyone streaming, but it was fine for work calls. And in summer, the area buzzes with outdoor diners, so noise levels creep up, but it’s quiet by 10 PM.

All in all, if you’re after a spot that feels like a home base in Melbourne’s inner east, The Sophia’s a gem. It’s not some flashy high-rise – more like a stylish hideaway that lets you dip into the city’s energy without being swallowed by it. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially for that proximity to the MCG (a quick 20-minute walk for footy season) or even just to people-watch from the room while the scent of street-side barbecues wafts up. You know what? It’s the kind of place that makes you appreciate the small stuff, like waking up to birdsong instead of traffic chaos, and at that rating, it’s worth every penny for travelers who want authenticity over gimmicks. Location in the Richmond area was super – lots of fun little restaurants and coffeeshops. Plus located above a grocery store which was convenient. Watching the street from the windows was entertaining! Well furnished from the owner's collection of designer furniture, it was uniquely appointed.

The location is perfectly located, walking distance to cafes and city if you wanted to. Transport is easy, as tram runs in front of the building. Danny is a great host, he was attentive and gave us great information about the area for our family to visit, and food recommendations – lots of great food in this area. The apartment is divine – which is full of beautiful art, rich history and equipped with everything you need. It was great for our family. Look forward to visiting again.

Could not rate this beautiful accomodation more highly – we were absolutely thrilled with our stay. The host is super accomodating and got us sorted very last minute even though he was away for the weekend when we booked. The fridge was stocked with some goodies and he was just so helpful from A-Z… loved our stay and will be back!

  • Siobhain from Australia (10/10)

Great location, tram only 2 mins walk, short journey to CBD. Lots of restaurants and cafes right at the door. Comfortable for a stay with kids or another couple. Nice and quiet but in the middle of the action.
