Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to Turnkey Accommodation on Blackwood Street in North Melbourne – it’s this quiet little pocket, you know, tucked away from the main drag but close enough to everything that matters. Honestly, after a long flight into Melbourne, I was beat, and finding the place was a breeze with just a quick tram ride from the city center – hop on the 57 or 59 from Elizabeth Street, and you’re there in under 10 minutes. The building itself has that modern apartment vibe, sort of sleek and unassuming, with secure keyless entry that felt like a godsend at midnight when I arrived. No fussing with a front desk; you just punch in a code, and boom, you’re in. My room – well, suite, really – overlooked the street, and the first thing that hit me was how fresh it smelled, like they’d just aired it out with a hint of eucalyptus or something local. The bed was plush, queen-sized with those crisp white linens that make you sink right in, and there was even a little balcony where I sipped my morning coffee watching the neighborhood wake up. Parking’s street-side here, which can be a bit of a hunt during peak hours – I mean, North Melbourne’s got that residential charm, but come AFL season when everyone’s heading to the nearby Marvel Stadium, spots vanish quick. Still, it’s doable if you circle once or twice.
What really sold me on Turnkey, though, was how it felt like a home base for exploring without the tourist trap hassle. You’re steps from Errol Street, with its quirky cafes – I grabbed the best flat white at Auction Rooms, this spot locals swear by, and it’s literally a five-minute stroll. Queen Victoria Market’s just down the road too, perfect for stocking up on fresh produce or those cheap souvenirs; I wandered over early one morning and the air was thick with the smell of baking bread and street food sizzling away. The accommodation itself is kitted out smartly – full kitchen with a Nespresso machine (a lifesaver for my caffeine addiction), speedy Wi-Fi that didn’t glitch once during my Zoom calls, and a washer-dryer combo that meant I could pack light. It’s not huge, mind you – the living area is cozy, sort of compact for a group, but for solo travelers or couples, it’s spot on. And the noise? Surprisingly minimal; Blackwood’s off the beaten path, so no blaring horns from Flinders Street, just the occasional tram rumble in the distance and birds chirping at dawn. I did notice the bathroom could use a bit more counter space – you know, for all your toiletries – but that’s a minor gripe amid the overall cleanliness and that 4.5-star polish.
Look, if you’re visiting Melbourne and want something authentic without the CBD chaos, Turnkey in North Melbourne is a gem. It’s got that 9-out-of-10 rating for a reason – practical, comfortable, and embedded in a neighborhood that feels real, like you’re living like a local for a bit. I’ve stayed in flashier spots downtown, but this one left me refreshed, with easy access to the university precinct or even a quick Uber to the Royal Melbourne Hospital if that’s your thing. Sure, it’s not right in the heart of the action, so if you’re all about non-stop nightlife, maybe look elsewhere – but for a balanced trip, blending city buzz with quiet evenings (think winding down with a book after a day at the markets), you’d be hard-pressed to find better. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in spring when the jacarandas bloom along the streets.
