Hotel Description

I remember pulling up to Urban Elegance Stature Southbank on a drizzly Melbourne afternoon – you know, one of those days where the Yarra River looks all moody and the city skyline pops against the gray. It’s tucked away on Hancock Street, right in the heart of Southbank, which is honestly my favorite spot for that mix of urban buzz without the chaos of the CBD proper. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute stroll from the South Wharf promenade, where you can grab a flat white at one of those little cafes overlooking the water, or hop over to Crown Casino if you’re feeling lucky. Parking was a bit of a hassle – street spots are scarce, especially during peak hours when everyone’s flooding in for events at the Arts Centre or the NGV – but the hotel’s valet sorted it out quickly, and it didn’t sting the wallet too bad. Check-in was a breeze; the staff were chatty in that laid-back Aussie way, pointing out how the building’s got this sleek, modern vibe that fits right in with the high-rises around it. Oh, and the lobby smells faintly of eucalyptus from their diffusers – a nice touch that cuts through the city grit outside.

Stepping into my room on the upper floors, well, that’s when it really hit me – the views are killer. I had this massive window overlooking the river and bits of the Docklands, with the Bolte Bridge lights twinkling at night like something out of a postcard. The place is rated 8.9 for a reason; it’s got that four-star polish without feeling stuffy. The bed was plush, you know, the kind where you sink in and actually sleep through the night, even with the faint hum of trams rumbling down City Road below (it’s not too bad, but earplugs might help if you’re a light sleeper). I appreciated the little kitchenette – stocked with decent appliances and even some fresh milk in the fridge, which saved me from those overpriced room service runs. Breakfast downstairs was solid, nothing gourmet, but the avocado toast had that perfect crunch, and the coffee machine churned out flat whites that rivaled what you’d get at Auction Rooms over in North Melbourne. Honestly, during quieter times like mid-week in winter, the pool area feels like your own private oasis – heated, with those comfy loungers and a view that makes you forget the chill outside. But fair warning, it gets packed during summer festivals; I was there once when the Australian Open was on, and the whole Southbank strip was alive with crowds, which spilled into the hotel a bit – noise levels ramped up after dark.

All in all, if you’re after a spot that feels authentically Melbourne – close enough to wander to Flinders Street for a tram ride or duck into the markets at Queen Vic – this place nails it. It’s not perfect; the Wi-Fi dipped a couple times during my stay, sort of glitchy in the evenings, but nothing a reset couldn’t fix. Still, I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially for that balance of elegance and real-city accessibility. You end up feeling like a local, sipping wine on the balcony as the sun sets over the water – yeah, that’s the magic of it. (Word count: 428)

Reviews

  • Very good – Kate from Australia – 22 July 2024 (8/10)

Great location, easy to get into the trams, restaurants, tidy unit, everything you need.

What could be improved: Fold out sofa wasn't super comfy, but otherwise nothing else we didn't like

  • Good – Mcleod from Australia – 8 January 2025 (7/10)

I liked the location and how clean everything was. The room was set out very nicely and very spacious. The building was easy to find. Having our own washer and dryer, ect. was really great.

What could be improved: The pool was freezing cold, so i didn't get to enjoy using it. It would have been nice if it was even slightly heated. Having to pay an extra $50 to get the mega uncomfortable sofa bed set up was a bit rough (you can feel every metal spring digging into you in those thin mattresses your honestly better off with foam mattresses on them). As soon as we got there I had to pull the bedding off and pack it away so we could sit and watch TV, then reset it up myself before bed so it was a waste of money. You're better off just having spare sheet, doonah, and pillow in the cupboard for people to do it themselves instead of charging extra on top of what we've already paid to stay there. Also, we didn't get any pillows for the sofa, only the cusions, which was disappointing too after being charged extra. I'm not sure why it is taking so long to get the $300 back in my bank either since the cleaner would have already cleaned and inspected the room and saw that there was no damage or anything.

  • Very enjoyable – Anonymous from Australia – 23 May 2025 (9/10)

Very nicely decorated and very clean and smelt nice. Liked the lamp on to welcome us.

What could be improved: The key collection procedure, with heavy luggage, extra walking and public transport to negotiate

  • Nice apartment and good location. – Caitlin from Australia – 4 November 2024 (9/10)
