Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon VAQUAY Little Audrey Guesthouse while planning a quick getaway to Melbourne’s suburbs – I was craving something quieter than the CBD chaos, and Ivanhoe just hit the spot. Pulling up to 7 Buchanan Street, it’s this charming little spot tucked away in a leafy residential pocket, not far from the bustle of Upper Heidelberg Road. Honestly, finding parking was a breeze; there’s street spots right out front, and even during peak hours when locals are commuting back from the city, it didn’t feel jammed. I arrived around dusk in autumn – that crisp Melbourne chill in the air, with the smell of eucalyptus from the nearby parks wafting in – and the check-in was super laid-back. The host greeted me like an old friend, handed over the keys with a quick rundown of the Wi-Fi password and where to grab the best flat white nearby (spoiler: it’s at the little cafe on The Boulevard, just a five-minute stroll). No fuss, no long queues like at those big chain hotels – well, except maybe if you’re checking in during school holidays when families flock to the area for the Yarra River trails.
What really won me over was how the place feels like a cozy home away from home, not some sterile setup. It’s a 4-star guesthouse, but with an 8/10 rating that feels spot-on – nothing flashy, but everything thoughtful. My room (I stayed in one of the upstairs suites) had these soft, textured linens that smelled faintly of lavender from the laundry, and the bed was one of those memory foam numbers that actually lets you sleep through the night without waking up sore. There’s a communal kitchen downstairs – fully stocked with decent appliances, even a Nespresso machine for that morning caffeine hit – and I loved whipping up brekkie while chatting with other guests, mostly couples or solo travelers escaping the city grind. The decor’s got this vintage Audrey Hepburn vibe (hence the name, I suppose), with black-and-white prints on the walls and quirky little touches like fresh flowers in the bathroom. Oh, and the bathroom – spacious, with hot water that doesn’t run out mid-shower, which is a godsend after a day hiking in nearby Warringal Park. Noise-wise, it’s pretty peaceful; Buchanan Street is quiet, though you might hear the occasional train from the Hurstbridge line in the distance – sort of a gentle rumble that lulls you to sleep, if you’re into that. One minor gripe: the Wi-Fi can be a tad spotty in the back rooms during evenings when everyone’s streaming, but hey, it encouraged me to unplug and explore more.
All in all, if you’re after an authentic slice of Melbourne suburbia without the tourist traps, Little Audrey’s a gem. It’s perfect for a weekend recharge – think lazy mornings wandering Ivanhoe’s village shops, grabbing pastries from the bakery on Lower Heidelberg Road, or cycling along the river paths. I mean, it’s not the Ritz, but that’s the charm; it feels real, lived-in, and way more affordable than downtown spots. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in spring when the jacarandas are blooming and the whole area turns purple. Trust me, if you’re visiting Melbourne and want to feel like a local, this is your spot – just book ahead for those busy footy seasons when the area’s buzzing with AFL fans.

Reviews
Great location, suited our short stay, nice friendly family owned restaurants nearby in walking distance. – Bruce from Australia – 16 December 2024 (8/10)
Location, close to shops, restaurants and transport
What could be improved: Located in the backyard of the property owners, lovely couple. However, there was no real outdoor private space while the owners were gardening and maintaining the yard.
