Hotel Description
I pulled up to VAQUAY Odyssey in Caulfield North after a bit of a schlep from the city center – you know, that stretch along Balaclava Road where the traffic can get a tad sticky during rush hour, especially if you’re coming from St Kilda way. It’s tucked right there at 157, unit 106, in this leafy pocket of Melbourne’s inner southeast, about 10 clicks from the CBD. Honestly, I was knackered from the drive, but the check-in was a breeze – no fuss, just a friendly chat with the host who handed over the keys and pointed out the secure parking spot out back (a godsend in these parts, where street parking’s a nightmare if you’re not local). Stepping inside, it felt like slipping into someone’s stylish apartment rather than a hotel – all clean lines, modern vibes with those Scandi-inspired furnishings, and a faint whiff of fresh linen that immediately made me unwind. I mean, it’s rated a perfect 10 for a reason, but as a 4-star spot, it punches above its weight without trying too hard.
What really sold me was how it blends that homey feel with thoughtful touches for travelers like me who hate feeling boxed in. The room – well, suite, actually – had this massive king bed that was ridiculously comfy, with pillows that didn’t go flat overnight (a pet peeve of mine after too many dodgy stays). There was a full kitchenette stocked with basics, which came in handy for whipping up brekkie from the IGA just down the road on Hawthorn – saved me a fortune compared to eating out every meal. And the balcony? Overlooking a quiet courtyard, it was perfect for sipping a flat white in the morning while listening to the magpies warble – though fair warning, if you’re a light sleeper, the occasional tram rumble from Balaclava Road might nudge you awake around dawn. It’s not noisy per se, especially off-peak, but during Melbourne’s spring racing season when Caulfield Racecourse is buzzing a few blocks away, things pick up. I wandered over to Caulfield Park one afternoon – it’s literally a five-minute stroll – and grabbed a coffee at that little spot on Booran Road; felt like a proper local escape from the tourist traps. Oh, and the Wi-Fi was spot-on, no buffering during my late-night Netflix binge, which is more than I can say for some flashier joints in the city.
Look, if you’re heading to Melbourne and want something authentic without the Southbank crowds, VAQUAY Odyssey is a gem – sort of like staying with a mate who knows the area inside out. It’s not flawless; the bathroom’s on the compact side if you’re traveling with a group, and you’ll need to plan around those quiet hours after 10 PM to keep the peace. But honestly, for the value, the spot-on location near Monash Uni’s Caulfield campus (handy if you’re visiting family or on business), and that effortless charm, I’d book it again in a heartbeat. Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or a longer stint, it just makes the whole trip feel… right, you know?

Exceptional – Merit from Israel – 27 August 2024 (10/10)
What could be improved: בחדר השינה אין חלון וחסר אויר. כדי לקבל מפתח צריך להגיע למקום שרחוק מספר דקות ברכב מהדירה. אם אין רכב זה בעייתי. מאד מומלץ למצוא פתרון לצ'ק אין נח יותר.
