Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to the Veriu Queen Victoria Market on Therry Street – you know, that little stretch right off Elizabeth, where the trams clang by every few minutes and the air already smells like fresh-roasted coffee from the market stalls just a block away. It’s smack in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, but not in that overwhelming, tourist-trap way; more like you’re tucked into the real pulse of the city. I arrived mid-afternoon on a weekday, dodging a few delivery vans – parking’s a bit of a hassle here, honestly, with spots mostly on-street or in those pricey underground lots nearby, so if you’re driving, plan ahead or just Uber it from the airport. Check-in was a breeze, though; the staff were these laid-back locals who chatted about the best dumpling spots on Little Bourke Street while handing over my key card. My room – well, it’s more like a sleek apartment, actually, with a full kitchenette that came in handy for whipping up brekkie from the Queen Vic Market hauls. The place has this modern vibe, all clean lines and big windows letting in that golden Aussie light, but it’s not pretentious or anything.
What really sold me was how effortlessly it blends into the neighborhood – I mean, step out the door and you’re basically at the market’s edge, where on weekends it buzzes with vendors hawking everything from organic veggies to those addictive hot jam doughnuts (pro tip: go early before the lines snake around). I spent mornings wandering over for a flat white and some pastries, then retreating to my balcony – yeah, most rooms have one – to people-watch the crowds below without the chaos seeping in. The beds are super comfy, like sinking into a cloud after a day exploring, and the bathroom had those rain showerheads that make you linger a bit too long. Noise-wise, it’s mostly quiet at night, especially if you’re not facing the street, but you might hear the faint hum of the city waking up around dawn, which I kind of loved – felt authentic, you know? Oh, and there’s a small gym and rooftop terrace upstairs, nothing flashy, but perfect for a quick workout or sunset drink. One minor gripe: the Wi-Fi dipped a tad during peak hours, but it sorted itself out quick enough, and hey, who needs perfect signal when you’ve got Lygon Street’s Italian eateries just a 10-minute stroll away for dinner?
All in all, if you’re after a spot that feels like a home base in Melbourne rather than just another hotel room, this place nails it – especially in summer when the market’s outdoor vibe is at its peak, or even in winter for those cozy, indoor market halls. It’s not the cheapest option around (rooms can push $250 a night during events like the Australian Open), but for the location and that self-catered freedom, it’s worth every cent. I’d go back in a heartbeat, sort of wish I was there now, actually, with a market-fresh avo toast in hand.
