I remember pulling up to 7 Cameron Street in Richmond after a long drive from the airport – honestly, that stretch along Punt Road can be a nightmare during rush hour, but once you’re off it, the neighborhood quiets down into this leafy, vibey suburb that’s just a stone’s throw from the city buzz. The place is called Walk to the MCG & AAMI Park – yeah, it’s got a mouthful of a name, but it delivers on the promise. I mean, I literally strolled over to the MCG in under 10 minutes for an AFL game last spring, dodging the crowds on Swan Street where all those trendy pubs spill out with fans grabbing pre-match beers. And AAMI Park? Even closer, right across the Yarra River – perfect if you’re into rugby or concerts; I caught a gig there and walked back without breaking a sweat. Parking’s a bit tricky on the street (Richmond’s notorious for that, especially on game days), but they have a spot out back, which saved me from circling forever. The house itself – well, it’s more like a stylish townhouse than a stuffy hotel, with that classic Melbourne red-brick facade and a backyard that’s surprisingly lush for the inner suburbs. You step in, and there’s this welcoming smell of fresh coffee from the kitchen – nothing fancy, but it feels lived-in, you know?

What really hooked me was how it balances that homey feel with some thoughtful perks. The rooms are spacious, with those high ceilings and big windows letting in the morning light – I had one overlooking the backyard, where I sipped my tea watching possums scamper in the gum trees at dusk (a quirky Melbourne touch, though they can be noisy little buggers at night). It’s rated 9.2 for a reason; everything’s clean and modern without trying too hard – think comfy king beds, a full kitchen stocked with basics, and even a washer-dryer that came in handy after a rainy day exploring Bridge Road’s cafes. Oh, and the free late checkout? A godsend – I lingered until 2 PM nursing a hangover from the night before, no rush or grumpy staff hassling me. That backyard, though – it’s the star, sort of an oasis with a BBQ setup and outdoor seating. I grilled some snags one evening while the distant roar from the MCG filtered through; it’s peaceful most times, but yeah, during big events, you might hear the cheers echoing. Minor gripe: the Wi-Fi dipped a couple times in the evenings, probably from all the neighbors streaming, but it wasn’t a dealbreaker. Check-in was seamless via a key code – no front desk drama, which suits solo travelers like me.

Look, if you’re heading to Melbourne for sports, music, or just to soak up that East Melbourne energy – think wandering to Fitzroy Gardens or hopping a tram down to the CBD – this spot’s a smart pick. It’s not some glossy high-rise; it’s authentic Richmond living, with that 4-star comfort wrapped in a backyard bow. I’ve stayed in fancier places, but honestly, the walkability and that extra checkout time made my trip way more relaxed. You’d be hard-pressed to find better value in this pocket of town, especially come footy season when everything books up fast. Go for it – you won’t regret the backyard brekkies.

  Another fantastic stay at this treasure – it really is like Dr. Who's Tardis; it looks relatively small from outside but step in and there's adequate room to spread out and really feel at home. Everything you could possibly want is provided by the thoughtful owner. Its position can't be faulted, a stroll to Richmond's cafes and eateries. its not even that strenuous to walk into the city (on a nice day!) This was our second stay and we already can't wait to come back! It’s perfect for our dogs too as there is an enclosed garden and lovely walks nearby.

  Daniel had thought of everything to make sure that you had the perfect stay. The kitchen was well stocked with utensils and condiments and there are even herbs in the courtyard.
