Hotel Description
I remember pulling up to West Side Place on a drizzly Melbourne afternoon – you know, the kind where the clouds hang low over the Yarra River and everything feels a bit moody, but in that charming Aussie way. The address is right there in the 3000 postcode, tucked into the west end of the CBD near Spencer Street, which means you’re basically a stone’s throw from Southern Cross Station if you’re hopping off a train from the airport. Honestly, I was skeptical at first because it’s billed as a “family home” with all these perks like a pool, sauna, and gym, and I’ve stayed in places that promise the world but deliver a cramped apartment. But stepping inside this 4-star spot – well, it’s more like a proper two-bedroom, two-bath setup that feels lived-in and welcoming, not some sterile hotel room. The living area has these big windows overlooking the city buzz, and I spent my first evening just lounging on the plush couch, listening to the faint hum of trams rattling down Collins Street below. Parking was a bit of a juggle – street spots are scarce around here, especially during footy season when Marvel Stadium packs out, but they have secure underground spots if you book ahead, which saved me a headache.
What really sets this place apart, though – and I mean this as someone who’s traipsed through Melbourne enough times to know the good from the meh – is how it balances that homey vibe with some seriously thoughtful amenities. The kitchen’s fully kitted out, with a proper oven and dishwasher, so I whipped up brekkie one morning using fresh produce from the Queen Vic Market (it’s just a quick 15-minute walk north, by the way, dodging the coffee carts on the way). Then there’s the pool – oh man, after a hot January day wandering the laneways, dipping in felt like pure bliss, though it can get a tad crowded around lunchtime when families pile in. The sauna’s a gem for unwinding, steamy and cedar-scented, and the gym’s no joke either; it’s got free weights and cardio machines that actually work, not those rusty relics you find in some spots. Noise-wise, the city never fully sleeps – you might hear the occasional siren or late-night revelers from nearby bars on Little Bourke – but the insulation keeps it muffled, and mornings are surprisingly peaceful. Sort of a minor gripe: the Wi-Fi dipped a couple times during peak hours, but nothing a reset couldn’t fix.
All in all, if you’re traveling with the fam or just want a base that feels like your own pad in the heart of Melbourne, this place earns its 9.5 rating for good reason. It’s not flashy, but it’s authentic – think cozy evenings with the AC humming softly, or quick jaunts to the river for sunset walks. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season when the crowds thin out and you can really soak it in without the summer rush. Trust me, in a city that can feel overwhelming, having a spot like this to retreat to makes all the difference.
