Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon the WOW Apartment on Clarendon kind of by accident last spring—well, actually, it was during Melbourne’s unpredictable shoulder season in October, when the weather flips from sunny to drizzly in a heartbeat. I’d just hopped off the tram at the Southbank stop, dodging a few cyclists on the promenade, and there it was at 105 Clarendon Street, tucked right in the heart of Southbank. It’s this modern apartment block that doesn’t scream “hotel” from the outside—more like a sleek residential spot where locals might actually live, you know? Check-in was a breeze; the front desk guy was super laid-back, handed over the keys with a quick chat about the best coffee spots nearby (pro tip: head to the little cafe on City Road for a flat white that rivals anything in the CBD). No fuss, no long lines, though I did notice the lobby gets a bit echoey when it’s busy—sort of like the hum of the Yarra River traffic filtering in.
What really won me over, honestly, was how it felt like a proper home base in the middle of all the action. My one-bedroom apartment had these floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Clarendon Street—nothing jaw-dropping like a full river view, but you catch glimpses of the Southbank skyline and the occasional tram rattling by, which adds to that authentic Melbourne vibe. The kitchenette was a lifesaver; I whipped up eggs from the nearby South Melbourne Market (just a 10-minute walk across the bridge on Coventry Street) and didn’t have to rely on pricey room service. The bed was plush, with those crisp white sheets that smell faintly of lavender detergent—total comfort after a day wandering to Crown Casino or Federation Square, which are both under a 15-minute stroll. Oh, and parking? If you’re driving in, they’ve got secure spots underground, but book ahead because Southbank fills up fast during events like the Grand Prix season in March. Noise-wise, it’s mostly quiet at night—I mean, there’s the odd siren from St Kilda Road, but nothing that kept me up. One minor gripe: the Wi-Fi can lag a tad during peak hours, like when everyone’s streaming after dinner, but it sorted itself out quickly.
All in all, if you’re after a 4-star spot that punches above its weight with a solid 9 rating, this place is a gem for anyone wanting to dive into Melbourne without feeling like a tourist. It’s perfect for couples or small families—I saw a few with kids using the balcony to watch the city lights come on. You get that blend of convenience (tram 109 right outside takes you straight to the city center) and little luxuries, like the in-unit washer-dryer that saved me from lugging laundry around. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in the quieter winter months when Southbank feels more like your own backyard. Just pack layers for those breezy evenings along the river—trust me, you’ll thank me later.
