WOW Apartment on Collins
I remember pulling up to WOW Apartment on Collins right in the thick of Melbourne's CBD – you know, that stretch of Collins Street where the trams clang by every few minutes and the suits are hustling to meetings.
I remember pulling up to WOW Apartment on Collins right in the thick of Melbourne’s CBD – you know, that stretch of Collins Street where the trams clang by every few minutes and the suits are hustling to meetings. It’s at 568, smack between Spencer and King Streets, so if you’re coming from Southern Cross Station (which is like a five-minute walk), it’s a breeze – no need to lug your bags far. Honestly, my first thought was how surprisingly quiet it felt inside, despite the street buzz; those double-glazed windows do a solid job blocking out the early morning delivery trucks. Check-in was straightforward – the front desk folks were chatty, gave me a quick rundown on the free Wi-Fi (which actually held up for streaming, no buffering drama) and pointed out the secure parking garage downstairs, though spots can get tight during peak conference seasons like March or April when the city’s packed with events.
What really won me over were the apartments themselves – I mean, it’s not your standard hotel room; these are proper setups with full kitchens (hello, proper fridge and microwave for those late-night market hauls from Queen Vic, just a short tram ride up Elizabeth Street). My one-bedroom had this massive window overlooking the Yarra River glimpses – well, sort of, if you squint past the high-rises – and the bed was plush, with those crisp white sheets that smell faintly of lavender detergent. I appreciated the little touches, like the Nespresso machine stocked with pods (saved me a fortune on cafe runs), and the bathroom’s rain shower that actually had decent pressure, not the dribble you sometimes get in older buildings. It’s a 4-star spot with an 8.1 rating for good reason – functional, clean, and way more homey than sterile chains. That said, the elevators can be a bit slow during rush hour, and if you’re a light sleeper, request a higher floor to dodge any alley noise from the laneways below (think Degraves Street vibes, with its espresso aromas wafting up in the mornings). I spent a week there last spring, wandering to Federation Square for events or grabbing dumplings in Chinatown – it’s all right there, no car needed, though the trams are free in the city loop, which is a godsend.
All in all, if you’re after that independent traveler feel without skimping on comfort, WOW on Collins is a smart pick. It’s not flashy or over-the-top luxurious, but it nails the essentials for exploring Melbourne – you know, those long days hitting up the NGV or strolling the Botanic Gardens, then crashing in a space that feels like your own pad. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially off-season when rates dip and the city’s laneways aren’t swarming. Just pack earplugs if you’re sensitive to urban hum, and you’ll be set.
Hotel in Melbourne bookings surge before Australian Open matches, so fans secure courtside stays months in advance.
